My boyfriend just found out the other week that he wasn't accepted ED to W&L. For as long as I've known him, it has been his only choice school, and I honestly don't think that he was prepared for the possibility of deferral (I guess there was a music professor at the school who told him he'd have no trouble getting in). He's been doing a lot in the past couple of weeks to augment his application for RD (new APs for this year mostly, but also more recs.), but is it really very likely that someone who was deferred will later be accepted? Does anyone know the rate for which ED deferred students get admitted under RD at W&L?

It definitely happens, what he should do is write a letter to Dean Hartog (or if he had been speaking to a specific adcom before to him/her) describing that W&L is still his first choice and that he would very much like to go there and also mentioning anything that has happened since he sent in his application that might give him a boost - awards won or something like that.

There is still a chance but he needs to be active and not just sit by and hope.

do kids dress up all the time? is it very formal? someone said they went to visit and people were all dressed up

We dress up to go to important meetings or speakers in Lee Chapel (about once a month) and also for dinner at frats on special days (homecoming, parents weekend, holiday weekend, fancy dress). Finally, the expected dress code at football games (as per tradition) includes ties for guys and sundresses for girls (many guys wear flip flops) but this is usually only observed at the first home game of the year, homecoming and parents weekend and ignored otherwise. Although this is probably more than students at other colleges dress up, it is by no means all the time or even near all the time. Whoever told you that must have visited when there was a meeting in Lee Chapel having seen people headed to/from or s/he probably visited during one of the aforementioned big occasions. We don't dress up to go to class, hang out, etc

Although I guess it depends on your definition of dressing up. I would classify a majority of the student body as pretty traditional in their style of dress. Collared shirts, khakis, jeans, sweaters, etc. No ill-fitting/baggy clothing for the most part. I never really saw a lot of students wearing sweats around is what I mean. Not much of the "gangsta" look either.

No we don't really wear sweats (or ghetto gear) very often. But about 90% of guys wear a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers to class - not "dressing up" in any sense of the words.

is a double major with law possible?

law is not a major offered by W&L, although we do have pre-law advisors - law school applicants at W&L major in everything from politics to business to history to computer science

Cost 300.00, but they add additional charges if you exceed the weight. My son has used them for two years. They are OK. Dima hope you will get involed with the Mock Convention, they are in the early planning stages now.

I don't want to get involved in the whole big event planning deal - I'll leave that to the future planners here. As one of the few open, active liberals on campus, I am waiting for the juicy stuff.

As for University Cleaners, I strongly recommend against that route. It leads to a lot of money wasted, often a lot of annoyance when clothes get misplaced and besides, you're going to have to learn to do your own laundry sometime - college is a good time.

Washington and Lee sent me a letter pretty much saying that in order for them to consider me further, they needed me to interview with an alumni in my area. They also sent me financial aid documents to fill out. I'm from Northern VA and have a 3.9 GPA, and 1500 SATs...I figured that W&L was a reach school for me, so is this a good sign?

Possibly, just make sure you schedule that interview and take care of those documents ASAP.

how can someone think a 3.9 and a 1500 SAT (assuming it's the old one) be considered a reach candidate?
also, the interview is rated as a 'not considered' on the institutional information available at their website. Do interviews count? That's good to know if so.

Even tho the interview is rated 'not considered' - they do weigh heavily on the report - if needed - or any question regarding the candidate comes up - like if on the fence and they are seeking 'good reason' to consider the candidate - so - yes - it is impotant to do an intervew if at all possible.

I know about this as we did the been there - done that thing - a problem developed on the day my guys app was reviewed - from a teacher at his high school. Our GC called the reviewer - talked to him and identified/discussed the issues - and requested what was needed to make this happen - they said - ''we will review his interview - and please send another recomendation'' - and walaaaaaaaaa - he was accepted that day!!! - So........ yes the interview absolutely CAN make a difference - could actually be the deciding factor - so go for it and good luck.

SHANA yes this is a good sign - not a promise - but good - and yes you do have good credentials for W&L - so go for it if you are leaning that way at all.

I got the interview request thing too..............

sumsum, im sorry to reply so late.........i am not sure about playing lacrosse, i love it and will probably play for the club or intermural team definitely...not sure yet though. do you play?

There is no intramural lacrosse. As for club, there is an unchartered women's lacrosse club team but I have not heard anything about them and they may not exist anymore. You'd have to look into that.

Edit to the above post: I just found out that there is an active men's lacrosse club team - still not sure about women.

BlueEyes-- I actually know a handfull of people who were deferred and later accepted. It's funny you mention that the music prof told him he would get in. A friend of the family was told he would absolutely get in by the lacrosse coach who was recruiting him, and he got flat out rejected. I guess this shows that W&L's ED round was very, very competitive this year. As for what your BF should do, Dima is exactly right. Do not give up hope, there's still a chance!

Talking about sports--what kind of stats do you think the athletes at WLU have? I'm talking SAT, SAT II, and gpa and rank (if school provides).
