no, adcoms aren't GODs there are unique last names, but in general they won't be able to tell where u from unless it is one of the common ones like Kumar or Patel.

In terms of negative AA, Indians get hit just as hard as the koreans/japanese/chinese. If your last name is vaguely revealing, there's no point in trying to hide it.

leave it blank..

Thanks. I think I'd just leave it blank or check it if there are subdivisions. I was just wondering what options they offered

fastMEd: That is hardly the case. I actually noted that I AM Asian, but that many people seem to assume that Asian is analagous to East Asian, which it is not. I wanted to know if they offered more specific options than simply "asian". I never said I wasn't.

And karupt, I don't think I implied that I was a URM

Chaoses: That's a good question.....Eastern Russians.

And luckily my name isn't THAT revealing. It's obviously not European, but it sounds kind of African-ish. Its actually the name of an African language. haha. I found that out when I tried to look me up online.

Asian Indian has median household income of $68771 (2004), and is the richest ethnic group in the U.S. One in every nine Indians in the United States is a millionaire, comprising 10% of U.S. millionaires (information all from Wikipedia). So for college application purpose, there is no disadvantage to be Asian (and even be mistaken as East Asian) rather than Asian Indian. Well, maybe not for HYP.

^^haha. unfortunately I'm not a millionaire. :(
I can dream though.....

According to the map of subregions here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:United_Nations_geographical_subregions.png , that Russia is not part of Asia!

uhmm from what I learned from geography, Europe area is considered smaller than North / South America. If it's included Russia, it would have been bigger. But it's not. The border of Europe and Asia is separated by Ural Mountains, that means East of the Ural is in Asia and West is in Europe. :D area of Europe is about 10 million km^2, Russia is about 17 million km^2 how can 17 mil km^ be within 10 mil km^2?

So East Russians are whites, but they live in Asia (so are they Asian?)

http://www.infoplease.com/atlas/europe.html

in fact wikipedia says russia is part of asia, it's northern asia
