jw, I'm Indian. Like, South Asian. Do you have an opportunity to specify that on an app? B/c on most standardized tests and stuff, the only option is "asian," which always leaves me with the question of whether or not to check that box, or check "other," b/c even though I'm technically Asian, 99% of people assume "asian" to mean East Asian" (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.). I kind of figured that college apps would offer more choices in terms of ethnicity, but I just wanted to make sure if that was true. And after reading those many discrimination-against-Asians-in-the-college-admissions system posts, it made me wonder, being Indian, would I be seen in the process as an "asian?"

I'm first generation U.S. citizen, parents born/went to college in India, and then got masters here.

Many, many Indians and others from that area of Asia. You are all Asians. I don't think anyone cares to differentiate; the purpose of that question is for federal info and that is all they want to know. Colleges use the info to report the breakdowns as accurately as they can, and to identify those who are URMs. There are rumors that Asians are discriminated against from top school admissions. I believe they are unsubstantiated and untrue, but if that bothers you, go on ahead and leave it blank as so many do.

^ cptofthehouse, I'm sure you're one of the white/black kid who only benefits from affirmative action. It's always easy for the "benefitting ones" to say what they want, isn't it? But let's not get into a debate. The fact that Asians are being discriminated against is a fact. You can believe whatever you want to.

I put Asian (Indian btw). I am 3 for 3 in top school admissions so far so I don't think that that little box I checked had any real effect on my decison.

When I applied for college online, they asked for main racial group, and then they asked you to clarify it. And among the sub-groups of Asian, Indian was there. So, Asian.

I'm not a fan of the term "Asian". To me, it sounds like "not white or black, so who cares? lump them all together!"

hahaha that's kinda true
asian is by far the most "diverse" race. When people think of asian they think of East Asian more likely. But Chinese don't look like Mongolian. Indian don't look like people from the Philippines. Middle Easterners don't even look like each other (Uzabekistan and Kazakstan and Saudi Arabian ...) Is Eastern Russian considered Asian too? just curious since that part is, by land, in Asia.

Colleges want diversity? admit asians only :D no no that's a joke don't take it seriously.
