Quick Question about SAT Scores

Here's what I'm looking at:
SAT I March - 610 Math/710 Verbal (1320)
SAT II June - 750 US/760 Writing
SAT II October - 620 Spanish
SAT I November - 750 Math/760 Verbal (1510)

How will Columbia view this? I drastically increased my SAT I score, but will the original score hurt me? My high on the SAT was in November, will they receive this score in time?

Also, will the Spanish SAT II hurt me a lot?

I wonder why we have to be so obssessed with scores... Why SATs can make us so happy or sooo soooooo sad...

And can I please pose a question..
Do SATs (1 and 2) really measure your intelligence?
Does it really give schools an indication as to how well you'll cope at university...
Apart from it being a standardized test.. what is the use of SATs?

Anyone could study for 8 hours after school and pull off an amazing GPA. Without actual intelligence, a good work ethic is usually not enough allow someone to do very well in life. Colleges want to make sure their applicants have a good work ethic and are actually intelligent.

And yes, I do believe the SAT is a decent measure of your intelligence. I feel that the several people who scored better than myself in my class are more intelligent than me, and likewise, I feel I am more intelligent than the rest of the class. I think it is a pretty good measure. The people with high averages and low SAT scores are usually the kiss-asses.

It may have been a good intelligence measure before the era of Kaplan's and Barron's prep material. But the SAT is too coachable to be considered a measure of intelligence. Sure, if you took it cold, maybe... but it loses all meaning when you're taking it alongside people who spent every weekend at some test prep center drilling for Algebra I level math questions and studying vocabulary lists.

inneedofhelp is definitely right to some degree but he's going to get ostracized for that

thanks contessa for the support, lol.

...so no one is going to answer my question? :(

you are good... almost. they want to see improvement and you show that easily on the SAT 1. However the spanish is very low for columbia. they do want all three SAT II scores.

I went from a 1360 in May to a 1500 in November. I hope they don't assume I took some expensive coaching class or something. Because I didn't. I just did a few 10 Real SATs in the week before the test.

inneedofhelp must have public schools in his head.... To get a A average in one of the top 10 private schools in the US is no easy task, or even close. Especially with a few APs.

so a 620 in a SAT II is considered very low/bad for columbia?

I hope not, cause that’s what I got in Writing....

I would not call it horrible, but its borderline bad/neutral....

Seems like I will get deferred. I just completed my strongest (grade wise) quarter with a 94% average, and I would guess Columbia would want to see if I can keep that up for the semester, and then reconsider me. Hopefully I will get in ED, but I am being realistic.

it wouldnt look bad if u took a class, it shows that you are willing to apply yourself to get better.

o lordy... guys... how much weight does SAT II scores have in the admission process? What are your takes on the SAT IIs...
and columbia only gets these Nov scores around Dec 1st.
will they have made rough decisions by the first week of Dec?

i think i really need to start focusing on RD schools now. and i thought id never have to do SATs again.. but i think i need to re-sit my SAT II test in jan..

I answered your question in the other thread....

On another note, I think I can saftly say I suck at standardized testing, because, in writing for example, I have became a finalist or won every single writing or speach contest my school has had (which is quite a few). And the ironic thing is that my father is the CEO of a large standardized testing company.

it's so bad though. i wanna major in english lit. and i do IB HL english and i get 7s..

and then the SAT tells me i suck...

I don't have the top 10 private schools in my mind because I, as well as most people who would be worried about getting into a great school on their merit, don't go to one. I do go to a decent Manhattan private school (tuition's under $10,000 though).

Yes, on your own merit... Its not like you actually have to work your ass off once you go to one of these top schools. I mean seriously, they just shove A+ up their students asses, eh? That why they are so world renouned...
