Quick question about the cooperative engineering program

The one with Columbia. Is that only for the Lincoln Center Fordham or can students from Rose Hill go to it too?

Both campuses offer it.

Sweeeeet. But I can only get a BA at Fordham? I can’t go for 2 BS’?

I dont know. But you should contact the program director on the Fordham.edu website under academics/departments/faculty.

I am certain they would be happy to assist you, particularly if you identify yourself as an accepted student and potential candidate for the program.

I was thinking about this program as well. Is it well worth it to spend 5 years as an undergrad and come out with 2 degrees?

I would think so. I mean, two Bachelor’s degrees where one is from a respectable and well-known school and the other from an ivy? Only for a bit of extra work? I don’t see where that could go wrong.

Yea, that was what I was thinking. It was either this or the honors program at BC. Which do you think is better?

That depends on you. Both are great programs and it depends on if you can handle the type of work load on them. The Honors Program seems pretty hard lol.

Well I would like to major in science and I think BC is more of a liberal arts school. At least with the 3-2 plan, I get to attend Columbia, one of the nation’s leaders in research. Did you get accepted into Fordham '16?

Yurp. I’m 99.9% sure I’m going there too.

Just remember that (1) whatever FA or scholarships you got from Fordham do not carry over and (2) the 3-2 program is not only difficult from what I’ve read, but it requires a specific course curriculum that can sometimes clash with Fordham’s core. Sometimes the classes you wanted aren’t available that semester. Summer classes are usually taken by 3-2 people. If you don’t have EVERY class they ask for, you will have to apply as a senior (therefore making it a 4-2) program and be treated by Columbia as a graduate student, which means less aid. Just plan your 4 years now.

I know a lot about it since it was the main reason I applied to Fordham. After getting into Fordham’s honors program, however, I probably won’t do it. That would be way too much work.

Wait, the FA I received does not apply to this program? I will still be attending Fordham for 3 years so idk why it wouldn’t

The FA you got from Fordahm only covers those 3 years at Fordham. From what I have read in past threads here (which you can search for as well), when you are in Columbia, you’re a Columbia student so you deal with their FA.

But like sovereigndebt has said, ask about it. Things may have changed.

Can I use AP Credits in order to lessen the amount of core classes I need to take and focus more on my major?

Yes:

[Advanced Placement (AP) Credits](http://www.fordham.edu/admissions/undergraduate_admiss/applying/advanced_placement_a_29654.asp)

Scroll down to see which ones count for the core. It’s not many as you can see. Fordham prides itself on its eclectic core curriculum and wants you to take most of it. For example, I have ~10 AP credits I could get, but only 4 count for the core, and two are under the same subject. The rest are ‘elective credits’.

TheJuanSoto are you saying the Honor’s Program is easier or less of a hassle than the cooperative program?

I mean I only need to fulfill the general reqs set forth by Columbia and the major reqs + Core at Fordham, right?

@cobot:
Not saying either is harder since I am still a high schooler. I’m saying doing BOTH at the same time would be a lot of work. I am all for working hard in college, but I’d rather not overwhelm myself.

@kimisizer:
This is correct. What I meant by saying what I did is that because Fordham has a big core, you’d want to plan out your whole four years carefully with an adviser or counselor. I have read of people who needed to take a class for Columbia but it was not offered that semester so they were held a year back.

Could I use AP creds to replace the general reqs from Columbia? And do you think this is a better option than BC?

I do not know anything about BC, but the fact that you are guaranteed to go to Columbia after filling simple requirements is a great opportunity.

As for AP, not really. Here’s the Computer Science (my major) requirements for Columbia:

[3-2 Program Requirements](http://www.cis.fordham.edu/required-3-2program.html)

Of those, I could get credit for only one class (Calculus I) because of AP Calc. I would have to take the rest. I’d still have to take Physics even if I had another AP science credit that could get me out of Fordham’s science requirement because Columbia requires Physics only.

I am heading over to Fordham in two weeks for a accepted students event. I will ask about the 3-2 program, so if I find out anything I will report back.
