I have orientation next week at the school I'll be attending in the fall. I'm also being recruited by the school for track.

So my question is:

Can you sign a letter of intent while at orientation?

And if so do you think its a good idea to ask the coach if I could sign it when I get there for orientation or just let him go ahead and mail it to me?

I think its more convenient for me to sign it there up front, but I don't want to seem to forward by telling him what to do.

I am not familiar with the track timeline but at least for my son’s NLI there was a very specific time frame that the letter had to be signed and it was not something where the coach could be in attendance. This was a regular public school D1 program. I would not worry about it, if the coach is giving you that amount of money his compliance deptartment will take care of the proper timing of your signing.

I’m confused as to why you haven’t signed a NLI already. Is this a DI or DII school? There are standard signing periods for all sports (same times through the year). Are you a late recruit?

DJ - is your financial award of tuition/books/etc a grant or scholarship given by the school (such as a “President’s award” or “Founder’s award”)? If this is the case, you are given that money free and clear, and it’s not associated with your track participation. This is actually good news as it can’t be taken away from you for lack of athletic performance.
