Do some colleges make you choose a major before you go, and others let you go undecided?

Say for example I want to study business management/marketing when I go to college. I already know that, so is that what I should aim for?

Because I didn't know this, but I guess some colleges have core requirements all undergraduates must have, and then depending on those grades you then apply to the College of Business or whatever their business school is, right?

I always though you apply to the business school and then just gain acceptance.

Are all colleges different regarding this matter?

Some universities have multiple “colleges” such as College of Arts & Sciences, Business School (like Wharton), School of Journalism, College of Communications, School of Engineering. When you apply to those universities, you must choose a school to which you apply. To that extent, yes, you’ve “chosen” your major because you will be limited to the majors given within that school (although at some universities, transferring between schools is relatively easy).

Some universities and most liberal arts colleges don’t have separate undergraduate “schools.” They have only the College of Arts & Sciences or the college itself. You apply there and have all the majors open to you. You select according to the college’s rules.

And then there are multiple variations of the above.

You must carefully read the information for each school to which you are considering applying.

But for like Florida State University, if I want to go the the business school it says that it’s a limited acces program and I have to meet certain requirements in order to get accepted.
