Any thoughts on the University for undergraduate business programs? MBA program?

My daughter is seriously considering this school for their health sciences department. We are visiting next week. We live in SoCal, so it is far away. She loved it when she saw it over the summer, but I wanted her to see it in the cold month of February. With this latest storm, I am sure she will see plenty of snow too. She likes the size and liked everything about The school. Loves sports too, and since they have D1 sports, that was another aspect of the school that she likes. There is not a lot of chatter on CC, so I too would love to hear thoughts on this school.

I hope you had the chance to visit Quinnipiac - the campus is breathtaking, surrounded by the Sleeping Giant Park. The Health and Science Department is highly regarded at QU, as are all of the science majors - nursing, OT, PA, etc. - the facilities at the North Haven Campus are stellar. They are opening a medical school Fall 2013, which will coordinate with the health and science majors. Did you decide to attend?

Yes! She will be attending the school in the fall! Really loved everything about the school and though it is a bit far, I think it is a good fit for her. The campus is beautiful, the program sounds great and we are hoping she likes it overall!

The business program is AACSB accredited, only 30% of the nation’s business school’s have that accredidation. We also have an international accredidation as well. They are ranked 61st on Bloomberg Businessweek’s Top 100 undergraduate business schools. We offer an invitation-only 3+1 MBA program for freshman as well.

Im a student and absolutely love Quinnipiac! It has everything I want as far as academics and social life.

Yes! I love Quinnipiac, too. Can you provide information about the dorms, specifically Mountainview? How are the rooms there, and are laundry, kitchen and study areas/lounge areas available in Mountainview? Also, any advice for freshman regarding studies, social life, New Haven, food, on campus tips?

Mountainview is a suite with 4 double rooms, a common room, and your own bathroom so you are in a room with 8 people. It is the newest dorm on the main campus and it is very spacious. There are two kitchens in the building; one on the second and one on the third floor. There are laundry facilities throughout the building; there is an online system you can use to check to see how many available machines there are in each laundry room before you drag all of your clothes over. There are open lounge areas at the end of each hall. There are also outdoor tables in the courtyard that you can use as well.
My advice for freshman year, create a schedule or a regimen of when you study because then you will stick with it. The biggest thing I can tell you is to get involved; the involvement fair in the first week can be a bit overwhelming but find what you want to do, not your friends or roommates and make sure you talk to the people at that table. Getting involved will take up a lot of your free time, give you a chance to meet new people and upperclassman and have fun. You will probably end up in New Haven a few times. Go with people you know and stick together. Some people really enjoy it and others would rather just stay on campus on the weekends; you will find both types of people. It is just one of those things you have to do once in order to figure out if you like it.
Let me know if I can be of any further help!

Thanks for the great input. Can you give any advise regarding the Learning Center and how to optimally utilize the services (as a health science major I want to keep up my grades). Also, regarding professors, especially in the health sciences, do you have any recommendations and is rate my professor an accurate measure for QU? Also, any experience with study abroad and are you permitted to take a summer class off campus (at a local college) to help with courseload etc? Intramurals - any experience or advice, especially regarding basketball or hiking clubs? Thanks again this is so helpful! LOVE QU so far!!

The Learning Center is great because the tutor has received an A in the course and is recommended by the professor. In order to optimize the services, you can set up a weekly meeting with a tutor in order to just keep up with the work whether it’s for an upcoming test or just going over assignments. There are many great professors at Quinnipiac; I would not use Rate my professor as a measure for picking classes or professors. Often times it is not the same class, and there are more people who take the time to provide negative feedback than those who had a positive experience and choose to provide comments. I have read something on there and have had a complete opposite experience, it depends a lot on the person and what they take away form the class. I have not had experience with study abroad…yet…but I do know people who have and they have absolutely enjoyed the experience. Depending on your program in the health sciences, they may ask you to go Spring Semester of Sophomore Year and travel to Ireland or Australia. Others allow you to go any time after freshman year and basically go anywhere you want as long as it’s safe for you to be there. You would work with our Multicultural Global Education Office in order to pick a school and courses. You are allowed to take a summer class off campus somewhere closer to home or online to help with the courseload. Some programs are set up to have that happen. I played co-ed dodgeball, basketball (there’s co-ed, men’s and women’s leagues; we also have a competitive and non-competitive league) and softball. They were a ton of fun. My advice is even if you don’t find someone you know to play, but you still want to sign-up online as a “free agent” and someone who needs players will contact you. Sleeping Giant State Park is right across the street so there are plenty of opportunities to go hiking. They offer various things like hike to Yoga programs.
