Quiting intership

Need some suggestions here. DS is currently on an internship which started in the summer. The internship was going smoothly for him for the first 3 months. He found he was able to utilize his skill sets, learned new things, wrote out work orders, contacted distributors, and was a liason between the contractors and the engineering dept.

However, one day he had to call in sick due to a severe migraine headache. Another temp worker (a female) complained to management that DS was not doing anything and basically sitting on his behind. Therefore, management threw him on the night shift as a form of punishment or as an appeasement of this particular person.

To make a long story short...DS is calling home everyday nearly in tears, stating his health is so compromised with sleep deprevation to the point that he has anxiety/panic attacks. He went to see a doctor who basically told him not to work nights anymore. DS is at the breaking point. He states they have him doing mindless reports at night, and that other engineers and contractors have told him that he's being singled out. He spoke to his manager who told DS he hasn't worked up to their standards and to suck it up or just quit.

Question is: Is any internship worth compromising your health and sanity? Or should you stick it out just to not look like a quitter?

How long more do you have on the internship? Also, why do you keep referring to yourself in the 3rd person?

Summer is over, why is the internship still going on?

It may behoove “DS” to get involved in undergraduate research as a way of patching up DS’s resume.

I am a biotechnology student ,currently in my 3rd year of bachelors in India. I am looking for internships in US universities. My GPA is not that great due to some personal issues that cropped up during exams ,so I failed a few exams in college but I have potential to do research and I love science. I am currently working on a research project in India and my report is due in November. I would like to do a summer research internship in the US or UK in May-June, for 2 months. Please give me some information on this.

Talk to your college adviser about this. There may be a way for you to write a letter to places offering internships, and explain to them what happened. They still may let you in despite your lousy GPA. This is what a friend of mine did.

A few things to consider

If your son isn’t going to be able to use the internship as a recommendation because according to the manager he has not lived up to their standard then there is no reason to stay.

He should get letter from the doctor stating that due to health reasons he should not be working nites and show it to the manager and put it then in their lap. Let them “fire” him so it does not look like he quit. Your son then can tell future employers that he was placed on nite shift and could not do it for medical reasons (a doctor’s letter was obtained) and the company did not like that and fired him.

Your son should talk to his advisor or someone who helped place him in this internship from the school. He can’t possibly be the first student who had issues and maybe issues with this placement site and see if they can help intervene or help move him.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

The internship is for a six month period, so he’s a little more than half way through.

Lakemom- Yes, he did get a doctor’s note stating no graveyard shifts. When he showed it to his manager, that’s when he was told to “suck it up” or turn in your badge. Looks like they want him to quit more than fire him. Others have told him to take the matter to corporate.

Tomservo- Yes, he does have work experience within his department’s labs and has been a grader for a few of the classes. In fact, he was just asked to become a student instructor for one of the department’s core class because one of the professor is taking a leave. So, no trouble in getting very good recommendations from professors. I’m sure he could also probably some good references from people he’s encountered during this internship, just not from management.

Lakemom- I will have son call his advisor at school, ASAP. He’s not getting credit from school for this internship. School starts tomorrow, but he would be allowed to add classes up to a week after. Worse case scenario is to have him quit and see if he can register for classes as so not to delay graduation.

I would rather have him quit the internship than to endanger his health and sanity.

I am pretty sure there are a ton of students that did not have an internship and are doing just fine in their academic/professional field. It is not the most important thing in the world.

I never has a software internship. What I did was take a job on campus doing some light (and I mean light) software development for one of the offices within my school’s College of Medicine. It still counted as experience (in employers’ eyes) and helped me land my first job right out of college.
