I am currently taking Preparatory Band, which is the lower level of band in my high school. Concert Ensemble is the upper level band for more advanced students. I am in ninth grade. My question is, would it be a good decision to drop preparatory band if it is bringing down my GPA? I do not plan on continuing with a music education, so the class is just wasting my time. Would it look okay on my transcript to have a dropped class, or would having the credit make me a better candidate in college applications? If I do drop the class, I will have a study hall for the rest of this year but I will take other classes in the coming years in place of study halls.
I would finish out the class and not take band next year. I think that would look better than a W.
I think you should talk with your GC first,then decide. If it is bringing down your GPA because you don’t have enough time to properly prepare for other classes, that isn’t great. If it’s just that your grade in band isn’t good, then I say work a little harder to get the grade back up before the end of the year. Having a W on your transcript at this time in the school year isn’t great.
