Qustion about FAFSA

So I was wondering if the school you fill out the fafsa ask to mail your tax returns to them?
I applied to UofM and filled out the FAFSA for the 2011-2012 because im beginning in the fall term. I used my parents 2010 tax returns as they filed it and the AGI was lower on that from the 2009 one. I am also applying for aid for their summer program and have to fill out the 2010-2011 FAFSA, which asks the applicant to use the 2009 tax returns. i rather use my 2010 tax returns as the AGI is lower. So, do you think that would be okay and would they notice and ask for me to send them my tax returns?

No, it’s not okay…the 2010/11 FAFSA you file has to be based on 2009 income and taxes (although assets will be reported at current values). If it’s any consolation, it probably won’t make that much difference anyway…many schools do not award much financial aid (other than Pell and loans) for summer study.

Schools can request verification at any time and are required to verify FAFSA for at least 1/3 of their students. Don’t get in the habit of fudging numbers…in addition to being illegal and unethical, the odds are good that you will be caught and your aid will be adjusted. You’re far better off knowing what aid you can count on before you start incurring charges and not setting yourself up for nasty surprises down the road!

Absolutely not okay. You don’t get to choose which years returns to use. For 2010-2011 you must use the 2009 return. For 2011-2012 you must use the 2010 return.

Thank You Everyone for your assistance
