Nope, actually instead of URM they’re ORM’s… gotta love the system and it’s confusion. haha

Yeah, both of those would count against you. I wonder if combined they make like a super-ORM.

i’m pretty sure there arent THAT many indians at UCs (minus berkeley).

As an added note, if you want, just leave your race as unreported.

ah, that sounds good. im sure it wont hurt my admissions process.
thanks spunaugle!

^^im asian.if i leave my race as unreported…do you think the colleges will still know that im asian based on my name…cuz my name is too ‘‘asian’’ :S

Haha they aren’t supposed to racially profile, so if you don’t report it, it will most likely not be calculated into their admissions. And I’d really say the “negative” aspect of being ORM is vastly overplayed here in CC land. So if you want just don’t report, and don’t worry about it.

that may be risky. if its like kevin chu or something, its best to be truthful about it. however, is there any way they can PROVE that you are asian? there is the benefit of the doubt.

^^so then i have to report my race.(my chinese name is my official name.)

Haha, no, you do not have to report your race. And choosing not to do so isn’t considered dishonest. In fact, from what I gather there are quite a few students who chose not to report their race (including URM’s), because they don’t want it/think it should be a part of their college admissions.

No. You are an ORM and statistically face tougher odds in getting into top colleges.

Are Indians really ORM? Like I know they do well, but are that that well represented at top schools?

Indians are considered Asians for statistical purposes.

The UC’s are not allowed to consider race in admissions which is why they are so disproportionately Asian.

Yes, at most top colleges, Indians are ORM’s.

Indians=ORM
Bangladeshi=URM?

See if there are any colleges in the midwest that you like. Indians are not over represented here.

It looks like Danny Yee disagrees quite strongly with what you posted earlier.

Your thread was merged with the existing FAQ thread, which you could have found by searching the forum. The short answer is that people from the Indian subcontinent (whatever country) are classified as “Asian,” and that Asian students are generally not in short supply in the applicant pools of United States colleges. But check the first few posts in this FAQ thread for more details, and recognize that if your background is truly unusual, it can be helpful to write about details of your background in your application, whatever makes your background unusual.
