I’m asking this for a friend.
I’m currently an undocumented immigrant from Canada, but my ethnic background is Native American (or indigenous). Which race should I put down on the Common App?

The common app will ask if there is a documented tribe affiliation if Native American is indicated.
The obvious one would be “American Indian or Alaska Native (including all Original Peoples of the Americas)”? “Canadian” and “undocumented” aren’t races.
You put down your actual race, and make sure to include that you are illegal.
Does the Common App even have “illegal” as an option? That’s an odd phrase and I wouldn’t know what to make of it. I think there’s a yes/no box for US citizen, but I don’t think there’s a box that says ‘illegal.’ Maybe @skieurope would know. I think he has some familiarity with the Common App.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
No such option
As a matter of fact, I do know. The CA does not ask if you are a US citizen; it asks for your citizenship status, with the options being:
• US Citizen or US National
• US Dual Citizen
• US Permanent Resident
• US Refugee or Asylum
• Other (Non-US)
If not a US citizen, it asks for the country of citizenship and, if a US Permanent Resident, your Green Card info.
There is a totally separate set of questions for race/ethnicity, in which case, the OP can put down Native American, which the CA will then ask for the tribe affiliation number.
That all said, I am closing this thread. “Asking for a Friend” posts are not allowed. You friend can set up his/her own account to ask questions.
