Hi, all,

I'm a religious watcher of Rachel Maddow, and for those who didn't catch it tonight, Smith College was briefly mentioned on her show. The news segment was on the doings of the Minerals Management Service (MMS) and their lack of oversight (to say the least) on off-shore oil drilling. Near the end of the segment, Rachel interviewed Danielle Brian, Executive Director of Project on Government Oversight (POGO) who spoke very knowledgeably about the corrupt culture at MMS. At the end of the interview, Danielle mentioned she hoped to see Rachel at Smith this weekend as she was already there for her 25th reunion; they had a fun exchange about that. If you'd like to see the segment, the link is below:

Well, that was cool. I wonder where she did the interview if she was already at Smith?

I don’t know. I was wondering that myself.

Most likely at WWLP, an NBC affiliate. The studio is only 25 minutes away.

Hey does anyone know if you can access the live broadcast of commencement from off campus? My D is just too tired to get up at 6am tomorrow to go back for most likely lousy seats.

Yes. Just go to the website around 10 am (~10:45 for Rachel Maddow) to view it.

Do anyone know if Smith will record Rachel Maddow’s speech? If it turns out as overwhelmedma says, that we have lousy seats and can’t hear her, it would be nice to hear it again online after we get home. If they do record it, where would it be–on the Smith website or YouTube (or someplace else)?

Well, since the video of the 2009 commencement address is on the website, I’d assume this one will be too. (Just checked and 2008 is also available, but Gloria Steinem in 2007 doesn’t appear to be posted.)

Thank you, Borgin. I’d seen the listings of the archives of the various years but I just hadn’t checked to see what was in them.

They have already posted pics of Ivy day on Facebook so I’m guessing it would be there too. Looks like they ended up having great weather.

her speech was AMAZING

It was a great day for a commencement ceremony. Good weather, not much wind. Rachel Maddow’s speech was great. I wasn’t entirely sure where she was going with it for the first half, but the end completely made up for that.

McPucks1357, I agree. It was a fabulous day, perfect weather and a wonderful ceremony. For a little while I was worried about the intense black clouds but they blew over. Rachel definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering until you see her direction. Excellent speech–all Rachel!!
