Racial Gap In Graduation Rates

“Didn’t I just say that UW has better graduate programs in the sciences than U-Va?”

And basically ALL the social sciences - Econ, History, Sociology, Psych, Poli Sci and nearly all the humanities as well. UVA does have a good English Dept though…

We all want UW to be the best it can be in all aspects. Still wonder what nova’s agenda is- know of no reason for an interest in UW…

Stooge, your comments betray your ignorance. U-Va Wise is a tiny liberal arts college that U-Va helped set up in far southwestern Virginia – the middle of Appalachia – as the only college in the most remote region in the state. It does a fantastic job providing educational opportunities to the poorest residents of the commonwealth where they otherwise would have none. Grouping its students in with U-Va students is no more appropriate than grouping UW-Stout students in with UW.

And, yes, U-Va can brag about being 8.7 percent African American. UW’s African American population is less than a quarter of that. And U-Va graduates nearly all of them, while UW can barely get half through.

U-Va, by the way, has been making great strides on the science front:

http://www.virginia.edu/uvatoday/newsRelease.php?id=11991</a></p>

What’s up with this guy, by the way:

So at Wise a craptastic graduation rate is fine for the poor folks?

It is in fact encouraged for students to spend a couple of years at UW Stout or another of the 26 campus UW system before coming to Madison.

Over 20% of Virginia’s population is African American. 8.7% at UVA is rather embarassing.

nova still has no reason to be posting on the UW site. Please let us know why you are bothering. People on this, the UW site, generally have no interest in VA or any comparisons of its schools to those in this state. Let’s get rid of the topic, ie any posts relating to VA or from nova.

Yes Wis75 you are right.

I’m done.

Stooges, Wisconsin is no different from U-Va on this front. The state of Wisconsin is 6.1 percent African American, but the entering class at UW last year was only 3 percent. Certainly U-Va manages to GRADUATE its students – be they white, black, or what have you – at rates that put UW to shame.

this ■■■■■ keeps coming back cause ppl are feeding him… cant we just all get along

I don’t post anything for awhile and I come back to see novaparent still ■■■■■■■■. I guess some things never change.

The fact is very few–very very few Black students in Wisconsin even qualify for UW using relatively easy criteria. Maybe VA has better lack students graduating each year. I am very sure they have more higher income ones.

Last I checked UW enrolled nearly 40 percent of its undergraduate students from out of state, including Minnesota. The overwhelming majority of the out of state students are white and upper middle class, nothwithstanding that Minneapolis has a sizeable African American professional class as does New York, New Jersey, Illinois, etc. – other big states where UW recruits. Blaming UW’s poor showing on diversity on Wisconsin demographics alone doesn’t cut it.

high-larious ^

Incorrect. The main attraction of CC is for college-bound students and their families to investigate and compare similar schools during the college search and application process, not as a brag forum for puffed-up UW alumni.

Novaparent’s posts are informative and counterbalance the lopsided view of UW-Madison often presented on this forum. After years of reading CC forums throughout the application process with both of my kids, we’ve found UW’s to be one of the most biased and intolerant forums on CC. Other colleges’ and universities’ forums are much more honest in discussing both the good and the bad aspects of their respective schools.

I totally agree. Wis75 is particularly egregious in this regard. It’s either her way or the highway.

I think we have reached this point

I don’t know, barron’s. You posted this note to wis75 on her visitor’s page that seems to confirm JiffsMom’s point of view:

"While you continue to minimize the Coastie issue a recent letter in The Cardinal appears to confirm it’s still an issue. I won’t put this on CC because it could be too damaging to UW.

Well, if you are into posting more private discussions you might have used this one from a prospective minority student’s parent from Florida.

"My wife and I took our son to Madison this Wednesday. We took the general campus tour. Uncharacteristically, he had an ear to ear grin the entire time. UW is now his number one choice. I don’t know how a kid from Fort Lauderdale is going to survive the Wisconsin winter, but he is convinced that it will not be a problem.

Mr Reyes was the most charming and kind person I have ever met at a university office. He was very supportive and offered a lot of advice. He even asked my son to e-mail him to let him know when his application was completed. He wants to personally review the app and help to put it in a positive light. I felt like we had a friend in our corner. Heck, he gave all of us UW T-shirts.

None of this would have been possible without your suggestions. Thank you, once again. And, I hope that, in a few months, I will be able to brag that my son goes to UW.

Barrons, it wasn’t private it was posted on the visitor’s page. My only point is that JiffsMom isn’t entirely off base. UW is an excellent school in many, many ways and has plenty to be proud of; it is not so fragile an institution that its boosters have to feel the need to sweep honest discussions of any perceived problems under the rug.

[Program helps ?students in the middle? graduate, go to college](http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/education/local_schools/article_3e3fbf36-781a-5eb7-ab7d-339d6cc7f76c.html)

And I was not aware those messages were not private as I don’t genrally go snooping on other people’s messages. I’ll be wiser in the future.

I apologize, barrons. Seriously. I absolutely respect your privacy. Because you are a senior member of CC with over 11,000 posts, I assumed you understood how the board worked. And you are a good advocate for UW.
