Do the races mix very well at Duke? I mean, do say Asians hang out with caucasians? I heard that this was a problem at UMich, which was why I asked.

I visited and it seemed VERY VERY polarized. Many of my teachers have also recommended my choosing another school because they have heard the same thing. The latest lacrosse scandal can't be making things easier.

I think that nonwhites mix much more often with each other than they do with African Americans. Personally, as a Duke senior who has been here 4 years now, I think that people who may not be familiar with the University, as well as those college guide books put out by Princeton Review or whatever, drastically overstate self-segregation here. It's really not that bad. Honestly.

My hallway has 6 asians, 3 blacks, 15 whites, 1 hispanic, and we all get along great. We hang out, we go out, we have fun TOGETHER.

I'm not going to deny segregation overall, but my experience has been quite the opposite.

"I visited and it seemed VERY VERY polarized." Can you define this further? I just don't see it here, and I would like to know to look into it. Beyond that, was this during a minority recruitment weekend?

No. Just during a visit. Like I said, whites with whites, blacks with black.s

My personal experience has been different as well, but also not denying that there might be an overall trend differing from my experience. In summation, I concur with bsbllallstr8. :P

Don't forget that the students at Duke have much more in common with one another than they differ. Smart, hard working kids are going to get along regardless of skin color.

Seriously...I have to say, I see "racial intermixing" all the time. I mean, I'm still only a freshman...I've been in an interracial relationship here, and my roommate is in one right now. I'm blocking with 3 other girls next year, and of the 4 of us, 2 of us are Jewish, 1 is Chinese, and 1 is Colombian. Just the other night, the 4 of us went to eat dinner at the Freeman Jewish center, then went to an Asian dance festival, and after that went to Rumba Latina (a Latin dance thing). I kid you not...that was just a few days ago. There is so much diversity here, and so many people who learn from each other...please don't be so quick to judge.

it seems like most duke students posting on this thread (and other threads that have similar content) have had experiences differing from the idea that the campus is self-segregated along racial lines. I think that says something about that idea - that it's not completely accurate.
