I’m considering applying to Hopkins ED (planning to study sociology) and I have been told that the students tend to be self-segregated, especially Asian students. I realize that this happens at many colleges, but apparently it is more noticeable at Hopkins. I am Korean American and a couple of Hopkins students have warned me that Korean students are especially stereotyped and often form their own cliques. My old school used to be segregated like this and I really, really hated it. Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor? This could potentially be a deal breaker for me so I would like to hear what current or former students or parents have to say. Thank you so much
Self-chosen segregation of ethnic groups, especially among international students, can be seen at ALL top colleges. I don’t see any problems with it. I am not sure why it bothers you, but If you don’t like it, you can always choose not to self segregate. Good luck with your college application!
I’m an Indian. I totally understand. Race is just one of those things that apparently still segregate us. I visited JHU, many Ivies, and Stanford and Berkeley this year. In practically all of them, racial segregation is apparent. Wheter it’s JHU or Stanford or etc. but racial segregation shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing… It helps create a sense of common values and traditions with people we can relate to.
Huh? So diversity is good as long as every group keeps to themselves?
The rumor is rubbish. I can tell you that some international kids tend to segregate themselves away from others but this is kind of understandable as they feel more comfortable with people of the same background. You can PM any other personal questions if you’d like!
Students generally hang out with who they can relate to most. So, some people hang out only with people from the same cultural or racial background. It isn’t noticeable however, unless you really look out for it.
2 So wrong in so many ways.
Thanks to everyone who responded!
@lusomedove Excuse you! There is nothing wrong with what I said. It’s my observation. At school, we have many cultural clubs and it tends to be the ethnic people that form a majority of the club because they can relate to it. You obviousily don’t know what you are saying.
