urban/suburban CA-er here.

I haven’t seen that much, in all honesty. I have noticed that as far as social circles, asians kind of tend to stick together in my high school. Stereotyping happens–*most definitely– but people are very accepting, at least from what I’ve seen, to Chinese people.

I know this is going to sound uber-superficial, but your accent will make a big difference as to how you’re treated here. If you sound American, you’ll be absolutely fine, but I think I have seen some bigotry to people who had an accent/ did not act like they were born and brought up in the US.

Okay, the truth is that many Americans are xenophobic. Racism isn’t directed solely against one race here. Americans dislike Hispanics, even legal ones, because of the aura that the media has associated them with. Americans discriminate against Native Americans just because that’s the way it has always been. My point is that while racism exists, it’s directed against many racial categories, not just one.
And the ones who do discriminate are often uneducated and forget that their ancestors, too, had to have come from somewhere. At least the Chinese didn’t come to America to massacre its indigenous peoples.

Just focus on why your here and have a great academic year!
