racism?

I heard there are lots of racism in U Mich..is this true? I am Korean and..I was curious .....before choosing the schools.

and if ppl talk about racism in universities, what particularly is it? in what way?

No way! Think about it, U-M's in the mid-west, where there's the nicest group of Americans ever!!! (And at least 60% of student body are from Michigan)

I'm Chinese by the way, I'm looking forward to the simple and friendly personality of mid-westerners.

Racism? I highly doubt it....sure you might find some wacko here and there in michigan but they extremely rare....while its true ive never actually been to the university of michigan campus (first college visits this spring!)...Ive lived in michigan all my life and i am chinese and I have never come across anything close to "asian racism"....

OK....its time for a little truth telling I suppose.

Is there large-scale racism on campus: probably not.

Is the racial environment on campus good: not really. UM is a very polarized place in terms of race, and especially with MCRI coming up next fall, its probably not going to get better. There HAVE been hate crime incidents on this campus, including a very high profile one this fall w/ a drunken student urinated on an Asian couple while harrassing them w/ anti-Asian slurs. These sorts of things ARE RARE...but I don't want you guys to think that it doesn't happen.

We put a lot of effort into racial understanding and cooperation at UM, but by no means are we perfect. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THE RACIAL CLIMATE ON CAMPUS! Its no worse here than at any other college campus. BUT, be aware that it isn't perfect. For more info, check out the michigan daily's website if you want to learn more about what the racial climate on campus is. Also, search out groups like UAAO (United Asian American Org), the Trotter Multicultural House, and programs like Inter-group relations which all are doing their best to ensure that UM is a less polarized, diverse campus.

gumba2468, are you gonna join Chinese Student Scholars Association at U-M? I know I am.

Racism? No. Pathetic football and now basketball teams that do not even compare to OSU? Yes!

What!!??....i had an impression that Umich teams are one of the best!!

either Joev is gonna get his ass wooped cause he is from ohio and likes ohio state, or Joev is gonna get his ass wooped cause he just dissed UM football

@ zhonggong...i dunno...i first have to see if i can make it into uofm...

To me, most of the top universities border on hypocritical when it comes to racism and "multiculturism." I'm from a homogenous small town school that has 99% whites and was looking forward to attending a top school with lots of diversity. I have been disappointed to find out that, while many diverse groups exist, they tend to congregate together. I was hoping for a melting pot where different people actually hung out together. Instead, the top "diversified' schools pracitce segragation of groups when on campus. At least this is what I have noticed while visiting several top schools and visiting the different groups available on university websites. Does anyone else find this odd? Perhaps I'm naive since I was looking forward to a true melting pot experience.

I'm from the Detroit area, and as Ann Arbor is pretty close, I'll give you my experience with people in the area. I'll start off with letting you know that nobody other than the true racists will hold anything against you for being Asian (unless maybe you drive a foreign car.) Asian people are widely accepted. One of my best friends considers himself to be a twinkie. Yellow on the outside, white on the inside (He's going to Princeton next year folks).

The Detroit area is one of the most segregated in the country. Most neighborhoods in the area are either nearly all black or nearly all-white. Asians will live in the same neighborhoods as whites. I live in Macomb County, my town is about 15 miles north of Detroit. Macomb County is not a well-educated place. Many blue-collar workers, not a whole lot of achievement among students when compared to Oakland County (just to the west of us). There are very few incidents of racism in the area, but many people are racist. Middle-agers will say racist things about blacks when with friends, family, etc. In cities bordering Detroit, many of them feel it is time to move when the first black family enters the area. I live in an area about 15 miles north of Detroit (upper-middle class area), and when the first black family moved into my sub, there was talk about the family not keeping their home up, home values dropping, other problems, etc. No problems arose, the families kept everything up and there are now a few more African-American families in the area.

There aren't really many fully Hispanic peoples in the area outside of the city of Detroit. Some people might have it in their blood, but they probably identify themselves as white more than anything else and are not given problems.

Hope this kind of gives you an idea. If you want to ask any more drop me a PM.

Even 30 years ago, at least in nuclear engineering, at least at Univ of Wis, there was no racism and a fair amount of diversity.

Our friends were our classmates. We had much more in common with each other than with the average members of our races.

I hate that crap about Detroit. It is truly segregated, with the mostly white suburbs hating the mostly black inner city. I've unfortunately even heard Asians making racist comments about black people. Word to the wise though, Ann Arbor is the most liberal city in Michigan, seriously. There will be very little racism on campus. If any it will mostly be directed towards blacks. And you know, racism in general ****es me off. It speaks volumes about a person's ignorance and stupidity. Just one of the major issues we as Americans must deal with....

Oh yeaah, U-M is a left-leaning school. how can I forget.

Hyun, racism is not a problem at Michigan. As KB points out, Michigan, and indeed most universities, could be more intigrated, but almost 100% of Michigan students and faculty are tolerant and accepting of different races and cultures. In my 4 years as a student at Michigan and my 6 years as a resident of Ann Arbor, I have never once encountered racism...and I am Middle Eastern.

Dexter, joev is from Ohio. Michigan and Ohio are the equivalent of India and Pakistan...and Football is their Kashmere! LOL I would not go so far as to say that Michigan is "the best" in football...but Michigan has one of the top 5 or 6 football programs in the nation. It doesn't get any better let me tell you.

No question there, Alexandre. :)

The question may have come up this year because there was a (disputed) incident about some asian students having beer thrown on them by some drunk idiots this fall. The idiot got arrested and there was a lot of press about it. Several important questions came up: Was it deliberate? Was it motivated by race? Was it something other than beer?

I am not sure the answers to those questions ever got all sussed out, but what it DID do is get a lot of people on campus talking about whether there was racism on campus directed towards asian students.

So there has been some dialogue about that, hopefully productive. One upshot was that the U started a hotline where you can call and report any incident you think might be racist in nature.

Rascism is a huge problem in my opinion at UofM. Being a black student here I get alot of stares as if I dont belong. I sometimes wonder if they people lived in a somewhat closed society, but anyways alot of others feel the same way. I dont know how many of you guys were at UofM last year, but housing was a big issue. Alot of people are saying that blacks are being all placed in North Campus, which in my opinion is true. Dont get me wrong there is alot of cool kids here.
