Yea euphoria z, that makes a lot of sense. It really annoys me the way other black people in my school act like they have to be a certain way. Anyone who is "black" in a different way is looked down upon.

It's just purely an observation, so cool it Shatner. Why do you think comedians always have a stereotypical "black person" skit, but not a stereotypical "white person" skit? And no, I don't mean rednecks.

? Why cool it? I was agreeing with you...

misinterpretation, sorry

i figured the "that makes a lot of sense." was implying sarcasm

i thought the whole post was tongue in cheek

Well, this brings up the interesting question of do white people have a culture?

I mean, I think black people do, and I have never had a problem with my black friends embracing whatever they feel that culture is, even if it is the particular type of gangsta culture that I find rather baffling and derogatory towards women... anyhoo, when i think about the culture of wearing pants low, talking like snoop dogg, etc etc, I do think it is a culture. Just like nerd culture.

And I think that perhaps white people do get mad when they see blacks displaying their 'gangsta' culture and other nonwhites even getting involved with that culture, is because whites have no culture of their own.

Of course, I'm sure you all will disagree, but think about Ahmad the Plumber, and the plumbers around the world. What would they think white american culture is?

Just my two cents, I do think that many black people I have observed have struck me as more overtly racist than white people, but the things white people say when anonymous, when among only white people, the things white people think... I would say that white people take home the trophy.

SPOILER ALERT:

You're racist for labeling one race as more racist than the other.

;)

Youre racist because all humans are racist, and if you say I'm humanist, damn straight.

I would say black people, because they tend to be the most conscious of race. As a white person I almost never think about race, but the black people I know tend to perceive every little thing as racist and constantly have race on their minds. Of course, historically they have good reason to be conscious of race issues, but it doesn't change the fact that they are really preoccupied with race.

do white people have a culture?

Okay, not to get overly off-topic here, but I believe white people do have a culture: the dominant popular culture. As the most populous race in America, I would say that white people (as a group; stereotyping, I know) have never felt the need to diverge from the dominant culture the way ethnic minorities have; after all, as the majority in this country, they have determined much in American culture. This is why they perceive black culture and Asian culture as separate from mainstream popular culture, because "mainstream popular culture" is really largely white popular culture.

Blah blah blah, that's really confusing text. Sorry.

White people can afford to not think about race because they are privileged simply by being white. Black people have to have race on their mind, because they are often treated differently by the law, by companies, etc. Ask your black friend, or mexican friend, whats on his mind when he drives through certain parts of the US of A.

You ever heard of white privilege? And it never crossed your mind that you, and me, are luckier than other people not to have to think about race?

Gee, why would a black person have race on his mind more often...

A 2002 Department of Justice survey found that, although the likelihood of being stopped by police did not differ significantly between white drivers and other races, black or Latino drivers were three times more likely to be searched than white drivers. Young white offenders are likely to receive lighter punishments than minorities in America. Black youth arrested for drug possession for the first time are incarcerated at a rate that is forty-eight times greater than the rate for white youth, even when all other factors surrounding the crime are identical.

(But I do think that if you define racism as "having race on your mind", then your point is perfectly valid) I'm just saying, perhaps this 'the big man wants to keep me down' mentality, while rather over the top, has roots in truth, and the concern is not completely invalid.

In terms of racism, I don't think any group is more racist than the other. In both groups you will find people who are racist to the extreme and a little racist. There are black people who respect white people but will never want their child to marry a white person. There are white people who respect black people but will never want their child to marry a black person.

What i think you guys see as racism is more what African-Americans see as culture, such as listening to hip-hop/rap, talking a certain way, and dressing a certain way. Yes, people who are black but act a different way are looked down upon, but isn't that like it in all cultures? Generally, people who are different are not popular. The little quiet, awkward nerd is not popular and neither is the emo chick who wears all black. Regardless of race, different people are looked down upon. It is no different with blacks. Different people are, for the most part, looked down upon. It may be sad but it's the way of life.

Yes, black people are more conscious about their race but it is because their is still a lot of racism, even though it may not be intentional, and they are constantly reminded of their race. Whenever a black person goes into a store and are watched more intently than people who are lighter than them, then they are conscious of their race. Whenever a black student sees that people who are lighter than them gets more attention than they become conscious about their race. Like I said, it's not intentional and I'm sure people are not aware of what they are doing, but the fact is that their is still racism. I'm pretty sure anyone who has been in a place where everyone is not like them will know what I'm talking about when I say people are treated differently because of their race.

In response to Nick017, I agree generally with his post, especially the last statement however I do think white people have a culture. I am not white and know few white people so this is coming from generalizations and what I see from the media so I may be completely wrong. I think that white people, in terms of white Americans, do have a culture except that it is divided into subcultures based on regions, such as northern and southern. They may not have one collective culture as Asians are African-American, but I do think they have some form of culture.

Nick017, basically said what I was trying to say in my last post. It may not be intentional but minorities are treated differently, which is why they may always seem to have race on their minds (which they don't. The only time minorities have race on their mind is if they are currently experiencing racism. Besides that, no one thinks much of race).

Btw, I just fell like ranting on the concept of "the white man keeping the black man down." Like, seriously. Maybe this was much more true years ago, but it is not that true today. Most of the people who say that have no rights. It is just plain ignorant to blame "the white man" when it's your dmn own fault. I don't even think peopel even know exactly waht they are saying when they make that statement. For example, a poor black person in the hood will say how the white man is trying to keep them down and that is why they rob and sell drugs. Btch please. They are just too lazy to work and when people give them work, they seem to think that you can do whatever you want and make their own rules. Also, at least from what I see, some blacks don't even know what they mean by white. For example, someone I know got arrested and said how those "stupid white crackers are racist and always trying to get black people down." I just wanted to laugh. First of all, the cops who arrested him were Hispanics (and they were hot too). Second, they only came, because one of your "friends" tipped them off (who happened to be black). Third, no white person put a gun to your head and said sell drugs. As a matter of fact, you didn't have to sell drugs because you are not even really that poor. You do not live in the hood or the projects no matter how hard you try to act like you do. You live in a nice neighborhood, with no gunshots (not even on New Year's Day), in a nice brand, new house. Seriously.

End rant.

That felt good getting that out.

Black people are only like that cause they were just recently slaves (recently compared to human civilization). But after oh, a couple hundred, or a couple thousand years, they should start improving academically, culturally, etc. hopefully.

I dunno about whites, but a few black people have said very rude racially charged things to me. And I'm black myself. Strange world, isn't it?

Everyone's a little bit racist; actually, not racist, but proud.

This question is idiotic, as has been most of the discussion. It will and has only lead to people making racist accusations. People should take at the very least an introductory anthropology class or somesuch before "intelligently discussing" things that they know next to nothing about. "Do white people have culture?" My goodness, the question itself is laughable. All people have culture. You learn that in middle school, if not elementary.

^The question may be stupid when taken literally, but it was clearly asking whether there's a unified white culture, which is less stupid.

OK, but how does that make the question idiot. And please spare me the diatribe about all races being equally racist, because it's not true (and never has been). Are you going to tell me that black people were as racist as white people in the 1800's? No, so shut up.

""Do white people have culture?" My goodness, the question itself is laughable. All people have culture."

You don't say? The question in nature you've included in your rant was rhetorical, in case you missed the clue train. Obviously white people have a culture, it's just not very definable anymore.

It's hard to say.... racism certainly exists among both groups, but I don't know who is worse. White people tend to stereotype black people all of the time, but one the other hand, black people aren't really helping themselves much with the current black popular culture. There is certainly a double-standard, though. You can have something like BET and that's fine. But can you imagine what would happen if somebody created a WET???? (no, CMT doesn't count). The fact is, racism and discrimination are all around us, and no one single group is responsible.

In response to the WET comment, I can tell you that no one will care if it was created since most people consider most of the channels on TV to be WET anyway. That's why BET was created.

I would honestly say that black people have become more racist in PUBLIC. They can be racist and get away with it.

For example: this black guy for Halloween hung a mannequin of Sarah Palin and the LAPD had declared it's not a hate crime -- just bad taste.

If a white person would have done the same thing but instead use a mannequin that looked like Obama, well, that person would have served some jail time.

I just think blacks are relying on the whole "we were slaves for so long and treated badly."

So if we had a White history month, that would be racist. I remember this girl in school wanted to start a white club, they didn't allow her. Yet they allowed Latino club, Black club, etc.

I honestly think the big issue is that Whites don't want to be seen as racist. Blacks take advantage of that. Reminds me of the movie "The Animal" whenever the black guy would do something terrible, they'll just brush it off.

But of course, we're all racist regardless.
