Is penn a walkable distance to/from 30th Street station? If so, how long of a walk? Thanks!

We visited there in March and I would definitely consider it walkable. We didn't have a car and just took the train around town or walked. I may not be remembering exactly but I think it was 3 to 4 blocks from the station to the edge of campus. You could also walk across the street from the 30th st. station to the local subway/train (I forget the name) and then take that to the stop closest to where you want to go at Penn.

aight thx! sounds good

At night the walk is slightly sketch, especially the Drexel parts.

I'm afraid to venture around Drexel at night, and during the day, basically i avoid the place at all times of day. It's scary there man.

^ hmmm... how sketchy is Drexel? Like what's the probability that I would get mugged? Are you guys serious?

Only half serious. Walking down Market isn't very well-light, so you don't feel safe.

They need to do something about that.

I wouldn't worry about it during the day at all. At night, yes, it's three long, largely empty and not-so-well-lit blocks.

They are doing something about it: the Cira 2 complex is going to be developed there between 29th and 31st south of Market. The problem is that there are a lot of huge, under-utilized buildings (30th St. Post Office now largely abandoned, old Philadelphia Bulletin facility, various crappy offices, parking lots) with no street life at night. The space between Penn and the river is where everyone is looking for the next wave of big development in the city, but for the moment it's, um, ripe for development.

There's definitely a path through Drexel from 30th street station to Penn that's always safe to walk on. Many of the faculty/staff of both schools come to work via train that way.

It's a bit of a hike (depending where on Penn's campus you are), and the University City regional rail station serves three lines (R1 R2 R3) and is closer to campus, which would work better for transit on those lines (including to/from the airport)

Switching the subway or a trolley from 30th street is kind of a waste though, because they don't come often enough, are crowded, and are not exactly in the 30th street station either. If you're carrying bags, take a taxi, as there are always taxis around the station and the fare is peanuts. If not, walk, it's not too bad.
