Rainbow House

So...I have so much to say and ask, but I will confine myself to these two:

If I were to move in somewhere like the Rainbow House...how different should I expect my experience to be? I want to be a Tufts Jumbo student, but will moving into Rainbow limit me to the gay activism scene? I am curious to hear how a house-experience is different than a gigantic dorm-experience. Maybe I should wait for my acceptance/rejection letter so I can attend April's admits activities and ask students there....

Also, er I hope this isn't a dumb question (I haven't figured out if I should know this or not) but do houses count as off-campus housing [and therefore deals must be made with residents] or is it the same thing as living in and paying for a dorm except it's not a dorm....?

As a recent Tufts grad, I don't think any of the specialty houses 'limit' your social options on campus. My best friend, for instance, was a gung-ho sorority sister in AOPi. I, on the other hand, went to one frat party my freshman year and washed my hands of organized Greek Life forever. She'd hang out with me and my comic book reading, WoW playing, talk about Chaos Theory friends. And she'd fit in. And I would do the same with her.

It was never an issue for either of us, and when I ask Nancy about her Tufts experience, she sees that 'social fluidity' as being a defining attribute of Tufts.

Of course, Greek Life and the Rainbow house are not the same. :) But the example is still relevant.

Also, I just reread your post and realized you may have been talking about extracurricular limitations, not social ones. That won't be a problem either (and that I almost didn't notice the possibility should tell you something about how far that is from the Tufts experience).

You can live wherever you'd like and still do whatever you would do if you were in a dorm! I lived in the International House my sophomore year and besides the fact that we threw parties consistently, my extracurriculars/social life wasn't that different from my other years at Tufts.

I even know straight people who live in Rainbow house. I don't think you'd be barred from other communities by opting to live in Rainbow, EVER. lol. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Rainbow house just part of Hillsides Apartments? You do have to apply specially (fill out applications for) special interest housing, but you deal with ResLife rather than a random landlord.

But maybe it is a little soon to be thinking about this?

Ah, thanks so much everyone!
