Raising 2060 to 2300s

Hello, I am a soon to be junior preparing for the SAT.
I want to get this done hopefully by the end of fall.
I haven't taken the official SAT yet, but I have taken some practice tests (Not the PSAT)
Although I haven't really studied, I have taken 3 practice tests all of which were around the same score range: 1980, 2030, 2060.
My most recent score being M:800 CR:670 W:590
While my critical reading score slowly increased as I practiced, my writing score actually declined (lol). I'm kind of unsure whether or not I will meet my goal of 2300+ by the end of summer.
So I'm asking what I should do to increase my writing score (Both my grammar and essays are horrendous) since practice isn't helping me much.

Also, I've heard from some people that some colleges don't even look at the writing section but only the math and critical reading sections. Is this true?

practice practice practice but also try to understand what you do wrong, not just skim over the correct answer!

It’s true some colleges don’t look at writing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your best!

You are so lucky! Writing is my best section, which sucks because it is the easiest to raise. Increasing your writing score should be simple. For the multiple choice section go over the 7 Deadly Screw-ups on Sparknotes and just work on plenty of practice questions! Once you see the trends, you’ll easily be able to score 800. To ensure a perfect score, you should also work on studying for the essay. Use the guide found here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html

If you plan some essay examples ahead of time and fill up almost all of lines on the essay, you will have no problem getting a 12. A perfect score on the essay is one of the best ways to ensure an 800 on the Writing section, because it allows you to get about 3 MC questions wrong and still get an 800.

Good luck!

Writing and Math (you don’t even need to raise Math, but I’m just saying) are easy to raise while CR takes a while, but just read more (classic/AP Lit type) novels and memorize more vocab words.

Whose practice tests have you been using? If you’re using Barron’s, you definitely will encounter trouble because their writing sections are not the best. The difference is very difficult to explain because though the format is identical, the style is extremely different and can only be noticed if you take a Barron’s test and then a CB test. You will definitely notice what I’m trying to say.

^ I’m starting to think this guy’s a ■■■■■. Look at all his posts. What a weirdo.

But, anyway, I’m in the same boat as you. I get around 2000-sih on practice tests but want a 2200-2300 by the end up the summer. I’m most definitely going to get CB’s blue book and do it from cover to cover.

My crit reading score gradually increased by 120 points and my writing by 90 points because of Rocket Review Revolution (best of the best strategy books for CR+W).

@qtpginger I actually looked up Jordan Brand Study Guide lol. I figured it wasnt really affiliated with Michael Jordan, but I was tempted haha

For CR, do what I did and:

  1. Memorize BOTH volumes of Direct Hits (approx. 400 words)
  2. set homepage as new york times and a read a couple of articles sometimes (I personally liked the travel articles, so I set my homepage to that)
  3. subscribe to wall street journal free. I read this newspaper before bed most of the time. Definitely helped!
ps got an 800 in cr! ;)

@risubu
The two volumes you’re referring to are Core and toughest vocab, correct?

This is literally exactly like me, I don’t know what cosmic force could have done this.

My most recent scores
Math - 780 (Missed one stupid problem)
CR - 690
Writing - 600

ARGHHHH no matter what I do my writing doesn’t improve

One question: does the Grammatix essay formula for the SAT essay work?

Writing section: For the writing section, I read all the sentences for the first part and decide which one sounds best to the ear. If you can’t decide, just choose the shortest answer choice that is not obviously wrong and that you have not crossed out yet. Also, avoid passive voice and gerunds like the plague; avoid them unless you can eliminate all the other choices. For example, if the subject is followed by a preposition, eg “The cat was stolen by her” or “I was stolen by the criminals”, you know that the answer choice is probably incorrect. For the second section, don’t be afraid to circle “e” and learn idiomatic phrases. Replace the subjects with “it” or “they” or other pronouns and cross out confusing preposition phrases. Learn about verb tenses (do a simple youtube search). For the third section, just use your ear; it works 75 percent of the time to eliminate all answer choices except for two. For the two that remain, try to justify eliminating one or the other answer choice.
