Random Northeastern Scholarship?! Please help!

I was ready to put in my deposit for BU tonight, and suddenly I saw an email...

Northeastern randomly gave me a $10,000 annual scholarship!! And now I'm so CONFUSED.
I like northeastern, but BU has a better business school and a better (I hate to say it..) reputation. But this random $10,000 scholarship is making me think twice.... BU gave me nothing.

What should I do?? I'm so conflicted and I only have 3 days to decide... AGH

northeastern

BU does not have a better business school. Look at Northeastern’s co-ops and international programs. BU doesn’t come close. Of course, if you are not interested in either of those, then BU might be better.

Northeastern’s reputation is growing fast. It is ranked overall about even with BU, but hasn’t completely lost its commuter school reputation yet. But if things keep going in the same direction, it will only be a matter of time.

luckyyy i want a random scholarship too

Hi there ktsinthehouse, I recently enrolled in NEU so take this for what it is if you sense any bias. I actually would have gone to BU if I had gotten in, but I’m a CS major anyway so that’s not the point.

OK so, the rank discrepancy according to Bloomberg Businessweek rankings is 9 places. 9 places in such low numbers of the overall rankings means more than it would in other positions on the list. That being said, there are certain advantages to both schools. While BU may have a somewhat better reputation, that may be different by the time you graduate with NEU being one of the top up and coming schools. The biggest benefit you will have in choosing NEU over BU is the Co-Op program which is job security. In my opinion, job security is very important. Additionally, the advantage that BU may have in reputation, in employers eyes, is not as big as it may seem to you. BU and NEU would both be in the same category of below the Ivys and below the NYU, BC type schools.

Something else to consider that may sway you one way or another is that NEU students mostly stay for 5 years. This 5 year program is the same expense-wise as the 4 year program, but offers students an additional two Co-Ops. With over 80% of the student body at NEU staying for 5 years just to get those two additional Co-Ops, you can understand the draw that this program has on students.

My final thoughts are that you should go to BU if you have your mind 100% SET on a particular career and you really just want to get into that as soon as possible. If, on the other hand, you are not set in stone on a career and want to have the chance of exploring 3 jobs during your undergrad time, as well as likely having job offers upon completion of your college career, I think NEU is the better choice.

My comparisons of these schools was BEFORE factoring in the scholarship that you received. If money is an issue for you, and you aren’t planning on being an investment banker or another finance related job (they make enough money early on that money shouldn’t matter for college), then the 10,000 a year can be very convenient especially if you want to utilize the extra “free” year at NEU.

Sorry if this is a little long or repetitive anywhere, I didn’t have time to go back over it. If you have any questions, send me a PM or post on this forum thread. Best of luck!

Take the 10k, that’s a no-brainer  40k extra in your pocket…do i really have to get into discussing time value of money here? j/k, hah.

Best,
Scom
