Random Questions

Iowa was quite nice. Miles and miles of GREEN farmland. It was pretty warm, but they were having a bit of unseasonably warm weather while we were there.

I heard a bit about their winters, though. No wonder many of the inlaws’ friends are moving to warmer climates for their retirements.

A new random question:

I have internet in my house. (Of course. It’s 2019.) Frequently – like, almost every time – when I leave my computer for ten or so minutes, I’m no longer connected to the internet upon my return. I can connect again very quickly by clicking on my internet icon and clicking “connect” next to my network name, but I want to stop getting kicked off in the first place.

Is this an issue I should take up with my internet provider or is it an issue related to my computer? It did happen when I was visiting S1 a few weeks ago, so I’m thinking it’s probably the latter. And, if it is, what do I do about it??

Cute!

We don’t. We have to use cellular data. WiFi is not yet available in our area except by satellite and neighbors who tried that were unimpressed. Fortunately our cell phone data plan is usually sufficient as long as we don’t care for high use sites or videos, etc.

With your disconnecting issue, I’d wonder if you had one of your settings set up to disconnect after a period of time of non-use. If not that I’d hand it over to one of my lads to fix when they came home for a visit.

@creekland, could you please send your lads my way? I’m in CT, and my boys (30 and 34) are not likely to come home in the near future.

@VeryHappy Can you rent or borrow one? I sometimes use younguns from school… It’s amazing how much they know about technology.

Otherwise, I feel fortunate that ours grew up to specialize in IT coupled with finances, medicine, and botany respectively. I feel we have all our bases covered as we get older. The IT specialist fixes what the other two can’t and is going to be managing part of our retirement. The medical lad has already proved useful as a Medicalese/English translator. The botany lad has started producing more of a bounty on our farm than we ever did by using different and earth friendly techniques. We should always have food to eat even after he moves on to put his knowledge to use in a third world country in a year or two.

In hindsight, we couldn’t have planned it better if we had directed each of them - nor would we have selected those paths TBH. Well, the botany boy we would have. He’s loved flora/fauna since he’s been a toddler. He’s the one who convinced me that Naturalist is indeed a type within the Multiple Intelligences Theory.

Try posing a question on your search engine. Also search your question and U Tube.

Taking a stab. There’s a setting in Device Manager that tells it to turn off when entering hibernation (sleep mode,) to save power.

You can fix this, but the steps depend on your make and system, etc. It’s what I’d look at first.

Thanks, guys. I did something that YouTube told me to do and I think it may have solved the problem. I walked the dogs for an hour and, when I came back, I was still connected. However, I can now log into AOL but when I click to get my mail I get an error message. Even after restarting my computer. I hope I didn’t mess something else up – everything else seems to be working just fine.

^VerryHappy, unlikely you caused the mail issue. AOL mail is having problems this afternoon. I have been getting an error message as well. You can Google it
https://downdetector.com/status/aol
and add your case to the counter and location data.

Oh, thank goodness. I just tried to log in on my usual Chrome, and then also tried Explorer and then Firefox. None of them worked, so I’m relieved to know it’s not me. AOL still works on my phone, but I get a lot of attachments and the phone’s not useful for those.

I’ve had the same issues with AOL today. Thanks for letting us know it’s not our issue, but theirs.

Count me in too. I’m on my phone.

All is now well. And I haven’t been kicked off of the internet in several hours. Thank you, CC!!!

I had no AOL problems today, but have. I usually end up deleting AOL and then reinstalling it fresh.

Remember the old days, when all programs could get wonky for no apparent reason? And make sure you periodically run some malware check.

Oh, I"ve got virus protection and malware checks up the wazoo. Thanks.

I can’t for the life of me remember which thread I was on when someone mentioned going to your state’s website for unclaimed funds/assets. I think it was on one of the retirement or looking out for elderly parents’ finances threads, but I can’t find the post.

I took the advice of the poster and found to my surprise that I had $100 of unclaimed funds (one for “Neiman Marcus overpayment,” and one from an unknown source). I claimed them, and just got a check or $100. I also see several thousand dollars in my FIL’s name (and he could really use that money) that we are going to try to claim for him, as well as money owed to my husband’s corporation.

I wanted to thank the poster for the heads up, but obviously can’t, since I don’t remember where I read about it. If anyone knows where to find that post, I’d love a reference.

Thanks.

New topic. I just finished listening to “Hamilton” (again)… I’d like to read his biography-which one should I get? Is there one that’s the go-to?

https://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Hamilton-Ron-Chernow/dp/0143034758/ref=asc_df_0143034758/

Ron Chernow. Supposedly what Miranda was reading when he decided to write/compose the musical.

@doschicos is absolutely correct. If you’re looking for the “one-to-read,” Chernow’s bio is the go-to book.

@Nrdsb4 - funny- not sure it was being discussed here, but elsewhere some colleagues were discussing finding insurance payments that were “unclaimed”. Several of us found $ (I had some for an office address I hadn’t been at in decades) and was able to recover around $400. DH found a $50 paypal payment (since he didn’t use paypal). A friend whose DH passed away found $1000 of payments to is practice.
