I have been copying the files to my external hard drive - in the past that’s where I “saved as” them. The computer has been restarted since I began having this issue but the problem continued. Reboot has always been my first choice of fixes! (Also a fun tv show that DS used to like back in the day.)
Yup, I know Windows 7 is no longer supported. It’s been tempting to upgrade to Windows 10 and I’ve seen online how to do it. I just have a great fear that my hard drive will take offense and kill itself ;). Or just decide not to restart… I do most of my online stuff on my iPad so haven’t been too concerned about the old desktop. But it is where I do the taxes each year and access spreadsheets and such. I’ll read more about it; good to know that 11 year old computers made it through since ours is 10 years old! Perhaps a project after the taxes are filed.
Good suggestion… But the last update was good and recent. Use something like Malwarebytes with it. There is some serious talk to actually continue the updates and not just for businesses that can buy extended updates…
As much as I don’t like windows 10 I would update asap. It’s again super easy and all your stuff will be there. I did 7 computers in a medical practice so not losing information is critical. (they do point to a server but that’s another story)
Looking to buy winter gear now for for D. She will be moving up north later this year (Massachusetts or Illinois are a couple of the places under consideration) from the mid-Atlantic region. Her winter wardrobe is adequate for lighter winters.
Years ago, when we lived in the north, the Eddie Bauer outlet was the place everyone shopped. I don’t have one here and our winters are not as severe so finding stuff locally would be difficult.
I found some good deals on their website - wondering if I should grab the deal now or look around some more.
Any suggestions for other websites that I could scope out now? Also, any tips on what to look for would be awesome.
Check out Mountain Hardwear. I have a winter coat from them from years ago and it’s still going strong! One thing I love about it is “pit zips”, which let you ventilate the coat without exposing your neck and chest. A lot of sites are having sales now.
You can also look online at Sierra Trading Post, or in one of their stores. I got my coat through them originally.
One feature that makes coats a bit warmer is a placket over the zipper. That way you don’t get cold winds coming through your zipper. Also a zipper that goes way up so you can pull a little extra piece of fabric up over your mouth if it’s really cold.
Thanks, @greenwitch, I will check both those sites out. The tips on what to look for are much appreciated - it’s been so long since I have experienced a real northern winter that I don’t remember what to look for.
I offered D my winter parka which has been sitting in a closet untouched for years but it didn’t quite meet her fashion criteria.
I live in MA, it’s not like Ice Station Zebra here. It’s not all that much colder than the mid-Atlantic area, where I grew up.
Sites like Eddie Bauer, Lands End, and to a lesser extend LLBean, are constantly running sales of 40% or 50% off. The bigger issue is size availability as we get near the end of winter.
Northern New England here. My North Face parka is too warm for all but a handful of winter days: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/w-mauna-kea-parka/4211818/lite My daily jacket is lighter, and most days a wool jac-shirt from Filson over a wool turtleneck does me fine.
For footwear, insulated Bogs for extremes, regular boots – Red Wings, Blundstones, whatever – for most days.
My DIL moved to the Midwest after 22 years in Southern California. A longer LL Bean parka is serving her very well. Bean has, IIRC, temperature “ratings” for their coats, and I’m sure other catalogs do too.
DIL’s coat was more important than mine. I’m either on my way to a car or building or walking around with dogs. She’s standing still at a bus stop.
One of my favorite winter jackets came from Athleta. It’s very warm. Look at REI also. They may be having clearance right now, and they have a great return policy.
I have spent lots of money at Eddie Bauer over the years, but they don’t seem quite as good as they used to be, and they closed the store at our mall, so I don’t buy much there any longer.
@AnAsmom - check these websites: moosetracks, sierra (formerly Sierra trading post- and part of the TJMaxx family) skibum, Peter Glenn, skipro, UtahSkis, Mountain Hardwear, Christysports, and even Zappos, REI, etc. There are lots of coupons and deals on line!
@AnAsmom - three guess who just bought a new ski jacket I first ordered a Descente from Peter Glenn (got a fabulous deal, actually 2 great deals totalling about 56% off) but the 2 was zipper was acting a little wonky so I returned it and they didnt have another in my size… Then ordered an Obermeyer from moosejaw and also got a good deal, (20% 0ff). It cost less than the Descente but I think it will be fine. Wore it today in the cold rain, as a matter of fact.
Both have free shipping and moosejaw put a note in my account for a free return if I had an issue.
Oh I forgot another website for you to check: backcountry.
