I just got a catalog from Lands End with a promotion: 40% off on everything and free shipping on everything. Ends 2/18. promotion code POOL, PIN 1884.
Apologies- yes moosejaw @notrichenough (which I got right in one of the places Thanks for the correction. Didnt know they are owned by Walmart, but they have the same obermeyer hacket that Peter Glenn and otheer sites had… for less (with the discounts). They are located in Colorado.
@BmacNJ, suggest you start a specific thread for trip suggestions. There are lots of people who give great travel advice on CC, but they may not always check this thread.
Maine is awesome!
I used to get amazing discounts on the Backcountry outlet site, the things my girls wanted. But like everything, it depends on stock, sizes and pricing.
For me, Feb feels early unless you hit a perfect sale or a season end clearance. What I do notice is October is late and Sept can be pushing it, if you want max selection.
I’m still looking for a good/dressy dark navy coat that’s not $$$$. A classic.
@Knowsstuff, @notrichenough and @housechatte She has been in the mid Atlantic region for a couple of winters now and managing with her lightweight gear that is really only suitable for southern winters. I don’t think even our harsh winters here come close to what she will experience with winters up north. So she really does need a good coat and a good pair of boots. And good gloves, of course! She will be doing a lot of walking on campus, waiting at bus stops as well as walking the dog.
@1214mom thanks for the update on Eddie Bauer - I had the same feeling when I went into an Eddie Bauer store a couple of years ago. Not the same quality as things I bought twenty years ago. I will look at Athleta also - hadn’t thought of it in this context.
@doschicos She isn’t as picky about the labels as she is about the fit. She wants something that will last for years so a good brand for sure. We are getting this for her so I don’t mind paying more for a good coat. And my comment about her declining the offer of my parka was a bit tongue-in-cheek. I’m a few inches taller and more filled out than she is, so my old parka (really hasn’t been worn more than 5 times) hung on her.
@jym626 wow! that is a treasure trove of sites to look at. We are REI members so I will check there first. Don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself.
Thanks to everyone who has chimed in, I will be looking at the sites and will take my time before ordering anything. I don’t want to hijack the thread for this topic so will keep my replies to a minimum.
I almost never buy anything on these sites except for stuff in the clearance section. EB right now has 50% off clearance, most of which is already discounted 30-40%. 65-70% off their full price is right about where their stuff should be priced IMO.
These sites are all upfront about their sales and discount codes, so you aren’t missing out if you don’t get a paper catalog.
ETA: don’t ignore Amazon either, they have a lot of name brand clothing. I always search there before pulling the trigger on other sites just to make sure I’m getting the best price.
Another vote for Sierra Trading Post. Good prices and good brands and good variety.
Another random question. Is anyone else all of a sudden getting a video running at the top of the CC page???
Yes @abasket. The video is super annoying.
SUPER annoying. I haven’t had that before on my laptop. Not liking it - at all.
Adblock Plus is your friend!
I’m on a Mac and have never ever had to download adware.
Yep, it’s very recent and very annoying.
Personally, I love Columbia, especially their omniheat feature that adds warmth with minimal bulk.
No video at the top, but I too have AdBlock and also something called Ghostery. The latter keeps any videos from automatically starting up, like when you click on a news link.
@AnAsmom Just saw Patagonia is having a sale - great brand with cachet among young people plus practicality.
I love my Patagonia Down Sweater jacket. I live in FL now but we visit MA every year and it has always been warm enough for me. I’m not walking a dog or standing at bus stops though, just general walking around town or going in and out of shops. If I moved back there I would probably use a mix of that and my long, down parka. I wore that in Minnesota when it was below zero and loved it! The bonus is that they scrunch up pretty small so easy to put in my carry on bags.
I second the Columbia onmiheat stuff. On the same trip to Minnesota I bought a pair of Columbia boots with Omniheat. My kids all said they were ugly but they are really comfortable, feel like a sneaker almost, and they kept me warm which is what I really cared about on that trip! Do you have a Colonna outlet near you? I just went last week and it is so much nicer than I remember. I got a ski jacket on sale for $80 and layering pieces for $20-30 each. Normally I would go for Patagonia or North Face but I go skiing for about 3 days every two years with some girl friends so I decided to go with the deals this time!
I have armed D with all the tips, advice and recommendations that I’ve got from everyone here and turned over the search to her. We will fund the purchase once she confirms which one she would like us to get.
She now thinks she wants the knee length coat because she will be walking outside a lot and Michigan has moved to the top of the list, lol.
@oldmom4896 thanks for the Land’s End promo code.
@lookingforward She found a coat that she likes at Backcountry. I was able to find the same coat, deeply discounted in one color (luckily one that she loves), at Marmot.
@doschicos Thanks for the Patagonia sale alert. I’ve directed her to Patagonia to see if there is something there that appeals to her. My son is very happy because I found a jacket on sale there that he has been looking for.
@momtogkc and @HImom thanks for the Columbia Omniheat recommendations. D will need to get layering pieces, gloves and boots as well. I’ve made a note with all the advice from everyone so we can refer to it once she’s ready.
No Colonna outlet here, unfortunately.
I am a general coat hater (just hate wearing them, but I live in Northern Ohio so…) and this year I bought a knee length very lightweight down coat and LOVE it. It feels like I’m not wearing any bulk but is warm.
Columbia has omniheat hats that are thin but nice and toasty too.
Spyder clothing is on sale at utahskis.com
