Is it just me, or do all the storms in the Atlantic sound like a New Orleans bridesmaid party - Hurricane Paulette, Hurricane Sally, Tropical Storm Teddy, Tropical Storm Vicky, and Tropical Depression Rene?
Paulette, Sally, Teddy, Vicky, and Rene - go home, don’t party.
I’ve come across 3 TI-84 graphing calculators while decluttering the house. They’re all still in working order, but 10-20 years old. Are they worth donating, or should I recycle them at Best Buy?
@frazzled, do you have a local public school that serves kids who might not be able to afford a calculator? My son is a junior high math teacher and since they are teaching virtually he has been concerned that many of the kids won’t have the resources to have a calculator at home.
(I am NO math whiz though and don’t know if your vintage one would suit today’s needs!)
If your local school district (or one in an area with poor families) still expects students to have that particular model of calculator, giving them to students from poor families may be a good way to reuse them.
Our school was still using TI 83s as of last year. TI 84 is a step up that some students had. Our school would also welcome donations. There were never enough calculators and families who qualify for free/reduced lunches rarely buy them for their kids.
@gouf78 for lack of any better reference to explain this, could you just take whatever recipe you normally cook and then puree in a blender or with a hand blender like you might have done for baby food - into single serving containers ??
Maybe watch the salt if the senior has high blood pressure.
@ucbalumnus Thanks, their reasoning makes sense because they pretty much have the same admission rate for both EA and RD. Other schools seem to favor EA, even though there’s no commitment…
But Early admit rates aren’t comparable to lining up overnight to get concert tickets…first in line getting the seats. You need to match what they want. It doesn’t add points to an otherwise weak position and a selective college can’t just be satisfied with the promise to matriculate.
But sure, they’d like to lock in the right kids. So rather than over focus on some school taking a higher % Early, I’d say put the energy into determining if you ARE the sort they want and honing your app/supps.
However, if the college is “shaping” the class, the EA applications may be read while the class and each subcategory is still empty. For a given subcategory, the college may early admit enough applicants that match that subcategory to fill up that subcategory, so that later round applicants who may have matched that subcategory are not admitted because that subcategory is “full”.
Purdue fills the majority of their class EA. I think it’s just another way to manage yield. Decisions go out in mid January and even though deposits aren’t technically due until 5/1, the majority of people commit well before then. They can use RD to round out the class.
I think all the colleges are shaping to some extent. It’s just not as simple as filling buckets. Colleges know their audience or constiuency, where they tend to pull students from, their relative strengths, etc. You might say, ‘Where their stream is strongest.’ They certainly know how depts are staffed with profs and adjuncts, what sorts and levels of courses are offered, seats in those. Some on CC make yield sound like desperation.
To cut to the chase, we have to accept there are multiple factors at play. Multiple megabobs with their goals. It’s not as simple as, “Hey, I had 2500 seats and I sold out in 6 weeks.”
My phone (a Pixel 3a) fell out of my pocket and now I have a diagonal hairline crack in the screen. Still seems to work fine. Can you believe I’ve never cracked a screen on a phone…is this something I should REALLY get fixed or can I limp through with a cracked screen until I get a new phone (most likely in the spring)? What if I put a screen protector over it?
If it doesn’t bother you, don’t bother getting it fixed. I’ve seen people use screens for extended periods that look like they were shot, with no problem.
A screen protector is probably a good idea, I always use one. Just be careful using fluids to clean the screen, you don’t want any getting through the crack.
