One kid story: A few years ago, we and our friends were sitting in the cabin, talking away. We commented that it was great that all five of our kids were outdoors, playing, since you don’t see that much anymore. After awhile, though, we noticed it was a little too quiet. We checked, and all five of them were sitting in the back of our SUV, watching a movie on an iPad! Oh, well.
@doschicos , funny you mention that, hubby and I just watched it last week. Good film. That family was a little more off the grid than we were. My mom was a slacker hippie, so there were a lot of TV dinners!
Good question. I didn’t quite run in the opposite direction, but I am nothing like a hippie. I am liberal and I like to think I embrace a healthy lifestyle. Life is pretty convential in our house these days. Conventional is nice.
I’m a little late to the floral delivery issue but I wanted to point out that I always take a photo of any delivery and text it to the sender with a quick thank you as soon as it arrives. I wasn’t even thinking of that as a way for them to see if what they ordered is what was delivered but it serves that role as well without making them think I am anything other than delighted with the gift.
The flower situation would be difficult for me. I would want to thank them and not have them feel badly that they weren’t that nice but on the other hand if I sent something and spent a lot of money I expect it to be nice.
My random question-
Any suggestions for dealing with sinus headache and congestion. I have had a sinus headache and tenderness to the touch at my eyebrows, top of nose and some under my eyes. It brings on some dizziness if I turn quickly or lay flat and get up quick. The dizziness goes away quickly. I’ve had vertigo in the past and it’s not the same sensation.
I’m using a saline rinse twice a day. Flonase in the am. Hot compress in the tub. This is getting old. Any suggestions as I have a plane flight coming up in 6 days. No runny nose, cough or cold symptoms.
@mom60 Have you tried something like Mucinex to see if it will dry up your sinuses and give you some relief? Might be worth trying before the flight to see if it might help.
When I have a sinus headache, I take OTC Sudafed, Zyrtec AND ibuprofen all at the same time, maximum dose. The combination of all 3 seems to work much better than any one or two and helps me get rid of the headache. I try to take it sooner rather than later, as it’s much harder to get rid of once it’s bad.
Sinus congestion sounds like allergy. Try Allergan (won’t make you sleepy). Other possibilities are Clariten or Zyrtec. Don’t know how long you’ve taken the Flonase but it takes at least 3 to 4 days to really start working.
Mucinex is usually used for chest congestion as it loosens up mucus.
Try Sudafed (behind the pharmacy counter–pseudoephedrine–or generic) as a decongestant (take 60 mg every 4-6 hours) and the Allergan (or other antihistamine). Ask for the stuff behind the counter–not all the “Sudafed” stuff out front which is a different drug.
Flowers–had an awful experience a couple years ago because it had to do with a floral casket display for a funeral out of town. Flowers were not there for viewing and sub par for the funeral. I had ordered them on-line and local vendor just totally screwed up. I will say the on-line company was very gracious and responsive but this wasn’t mother’s day–it was a funeral–not a lot of “do-overs”.
Yes, I took pictures–the flowers were “okay” but not what was paid for. Got a total refund (250 bucks) but not worth the angst and upset. Still upsets me to think about it.
Oh yea, try using Afrin as directed for a few days. It may feel like an ice pick but it does help clear congestion. Just don’t use it longer than directed. There’s also astellin which is offered as an Rx nasal antihistamine. It never really worked for me or our kids but the pediatrician claimed it worked for some of his patients.
When I have a sinus headache, I pull out all the stops and take all the different things the docs recommend. It’s important to READ all the labels, especially if you’re taking a new formulation. Some of the combo products have ibuprofen or tylenlol or aspirin already IN them, so you can take a much larger dose than you intend if you don’t carefully read the labels and possibly cause permanent liver or other damage. I try to take products that are NOT combos so that I know exactly how much of each medication I’m getting.
@mom60
If sinus condition has been going on a while, you may need antibiotics. Sometimes it is bacterial. Even so, not a quick cure as apparently it’s really hard for antibiotics to cross into the sinuses.
Claritin D helps me with my allergies, in fact I use it proactively whenever I fly. The D part should help with the sinuses. I only use the 12 hour version and only use it during the day as it keeps me awake at night, but in your situation I’d use it around the clock for at least a few days. Or maybe it won’t affect your sleep.
Been there, done that. You have my sympathies because I know how horrible it is and how difficult to get under control.
Thanks everyone for the great advice. I don’t think I need antibiotics. I don’t have a fever and I’m pretty sure it is from allergies. I have had trouble with my ears and vertigo for the past few years but this is a different sort of dizziness. I asked the Dr about it at my last physical since I was having a problem at the time. We did some movement tests and this dizziness is definitely from the sinus congestion. Add in the headache and it’s been unbearable. Last time using the Flonase and the saline rinse did the trick. This time I’m not so lucky. I found some Zyrtec in the medicine cabinet and started that today. It is a 24 hour formula. I use it when I have bad hay fever but I don’t like to take it for to many days as I don’t like how it makes me feel. I have Sudafed but it isn’t the behind the counter version. It’s Sudafed PE 10 mg of Phenylephrine. I need to go to CVS to pick up a few prescriptions tomorrow so I’ll ask about getting something from behind the counter.
Any preference of Claritin or Allegra over Zyrtec? It’s so confusing all the different formulations.
Some folks rotate among the different formulations. Zyrtec is the only one that works for me. I prefer taking plain Zyrtec so I can also take plain sudafed and plain ibuprofen and not accidentally OD on anything. Good luck. Maybe see your doc if you can’t get relief soon.
Different strokes for different folks. Some drugs work differently for different people or people get side effects, etc. so it’s a very personal decision. I agree with keeping medications separate as much as possible rather than a combination medicine.
For myself, I just came up with Claritin D by trial and error long ago. The D part is not even supposed to be the part that helps with allergies but plain Claritin does nothing for me. Claritin D dries me right up. I used to be able to get a generic that was just the D part but not lately.
It was my PA daughter that suggested getting the 12 hour version and not taking it at night. Logically you would think you’d be all stuffed up overnight but somehow, not.
Thank you to all of the great advice. I picked up the behind the counter Sudafed decongestant and I feel the best I’ve felt in weeks. I also switched today to Claritin from Zyrtec to see if I have less side effects. Still some pressure but headache is hopefully a thing of the past.
