Random question: Why is it that some weeks there’s nothing on CC that interests me, and then other weeks there are six or eight threads that I’m following avidly? Sometimes I think maybe I’m done with CC and then things liven up again.
Late to the party, but I prefer Allegra to Claritin. Zyrtec makes me feel like a zombie.
Each of these meds affects each person so differently. When I take Allegra or Claritin, it’s like nothing at all. It does nothing for allergies for me. Zyrtec works a bit and helps put me to sleep as well, so good for me to take at night.
My kids have to rotate as their body seems to build a tolerance to the antihistamine if they’ve taken it awhile. When they’re having a bad allergy attack, they sometimes need to take twice the recommended dose to help get things under control. It knocks them out but when they wake up, allergies are better.
We also use allergy control barriers on all bedding, since we’re highly allergic to dust and dust mites.
I’ve been noticing tiny bits of fluff on my slacks and shorts after wearing down vest and jacket. They’re really tiny but look like lint. I have put both garments in the dryer with no heat with tennis balls to try to help reduce shedding. They’re not big feathers, just lots of very tiny bits–mini feathers. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
@Consolation - I considered Allegra but I went with Claritin based on some of the previous posters. If I don’t like how I feel on it I’ll try Allegra. I love how Zyrtec works on my allergies but I feel totally out of sorts on it. I only use it when my sneezing and runny nose and itchy eyes are driving me crazy.
Until this year I’ve never had this sinus pressure type of allergy.
VH, I find if I check too many times a day I don’t get my “fix” becuae I’m only reading a few posts on a couple of threads. I’ve been trying to come on a little less often, but then spend more reading/responding, so I feel like I’ve gotten what I came for.
As soon as cb buys another house, I’m sure postings will spike across the spectrum!
I hear you VeryHappy. I often have no interest in many of the threads. I leave for awhile, come back and then see threads I wish I could have been a part of many answers/pages ago. I guess you just have to keep checking.
No one with thoughts about the down vest and coat that are leaving little bits of white tiny feathers and white lint on garments that I wear ubder the jacket or coat? Admittedly, these are inexpensive (from Costco and Sam’s Club). His more expensive one from Patagonia is better at not leaving anything on his garments.
I did put them on no heat fluff cycle in the dryer for 40 minutes with 3 new tennis balls to see if it helps. I cleaned the lint trap twice – it did have those tiny feathers and lint.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve never owned down clothing before, so don’t have much of a reference point. Thanks.
The only idea I have is for you to vacuum the vest. However, that might suck out more of the down than you want, leaving you with a very skinny and not-warm vest.
@VeryHappy, thanks for the thought, but there is nothing visible to vacuum. It’s just after wearing the garments for a few hours, there is some fine feathers and residue on your clothes, particularly if you have dark clothing.
@HImom - I think it’s the quality of the garment.
I don’t know if it’s the quality of down, the thinness or makeup of the fabric or maybe the quality of stitching. I have a Costco down vest and a Costco down lap size blanket that both shed like crazy. I have Marmot, REI brand, Patagonia and North Face items that don’t shed much at all.
Dang, @mom60. I guess next time I will have to splurge more and get higher end garments. In the articles I’ve been reading online, some say ALL down garments shed while other articles claim the higher quality garments shed MUCH less. So far, since H’s vest doesn’t shed nearly as much as mine, I’m thinking mine was not as well made ($40 at Costco for down jacket and $20 at Sam’s for vest). Of well, am learning what I do and don’t like about down and may be on the lookout for higher quality items in the near future.
I really loved having packable down jacket–perfect for the plane, A/C and nippy D.C. mornings & nights. Carrying it around in the pack was nothing, since it has barely any weight. Wearing it unzipped didn’t make me hot but was good in case I got cold.
Just the fact that we are discussing down vests in June is downright depressing…
(…it’s 51 degrees and pouring rain here in CT, so I get it, but still depressing.) :((
@HImom You’re definitely an island person talking about down in June and on airplanes. In my neck of the woods, it’s something saved for true winter. We’re supposed to have an unseasonably cool high of 49 degrees today, though!
I do agree it is a quality issue. You might consider returning them. I bet you can find a good deal off-season on something from Patagonia or LL Bean or similar that won’t shed.
@JustaMom5465: I’m in CT also, and this is the worst spring ever.
We’ve been needing the rain, though, so glad for that!
I have mushrooms in my new lawn, from all this rain.
We have a crazy amount of mushrooms this year, in varieties I’ve never seen before!
I read we’re supposed to be happy, that it means a good, rich organic soil base. Yeah huh.
In July we will be heading to Glacier which is cold for us between the altitude and the temperatures. October I will be in Yosemite, which tends to be cold for me as well.
