<p>The internet is fine at UCSC if you use an ethernet connection. It’s a significant step up from a regular DSL connection and probably about the same as a regular cable connection. Even the wireless is decent, but I don’t believe you can play games over the wireless connection.</p>

<p>I haven’t run a test, but, from what I recall reading, the internet speed is significantly higher than you would be able to get in your home without paying a small fortune. There is, however, a bandwidth limit of 2GB per day. So just watch how much data you’re uploading. You’ll be fine for downloading data, though.</p>

<p>There is no officially published upload or download (specifically) limit that I can find. The only thing that is stated is a “2GB bandwidth limit per day.” Going by what this means, it would mean both upload AND download. However, I reach this within a couple hours doing basic, daily activities (software and OS updates, general surfing, email, IM, etc). My download being significantly higher than my upload, though.</p>
<p>They advertise legal entertainment sites (netflix, napster, etc) for acquiring your videos and music so it stands to reason that they expect downloads to exceed 2GB a day. I’ve had some updates that exceeded that amount alone as well.</p>

<p>A friend of mine who lives off campus now says one of the only thing he misses about on campus living is the internet. He did choose to torrent and regularly would lose his internet due to exceeding the limitations. But his torrents moved extremely fast (both upload and download).</p>
<p>Just wondering, does UCSC block certain sites? My current high school blocks all sports, game realated, pornographic sites, basically anything that is not related to school. That would be a bummer if I was not allowed to log into my fantasy sport sites.</p>

<p>^^ I emailed my housing director and he told me that you find out about roommates and such at least by July 14th. Which is waaay sooner than I thought!</p>
<p>UCSC doesn’t block any of those websites. You will be mailed a housing packet that lists your room number and contact information for your roommate.</p>
<p>You lose internet for 3 days if you go over the bandwidth so a bit worse than “just a day” XD. If you’re caught downloading copyrighted material illegally, though, you can lose your internet access for up to two weeks. And you have to complete some sort of copyright quiz to acknowledge you’ve “learned not to be naughty” or something.</p>

<p>Just follow the rules ;). Don’t be an idiot like my friend was because there’s a high chance you may lose internet when you really need it for classes. I know I have been saved a thousand fold by having internet access whenever I want it.</p>
