When I choose to go random, will I fill out a form with questions that describes me- will I be matched like that? Or is it 100% completely random?

It is completely random without regard to anything like personalities, etc. Tulane says that the “success” rate is about the same whether you choose someone or go random. Good luck.

My son is going random for Wall. He is surprisingly unconcerned about this.

It does occur to me that one common characteristic of people that end up as roomies this way is that they both decided to go random. Meaningful? Talk amongst yourselves.

Hmmm, interesting thought. He’s not so concerned because he figures people that apply to Wall in the first place are going to (hopefully) have some commonalities. Since you have to write essays and are automatically involved via the committees in Wall, most residents are going to be social people who like to be involved on campus and hopefully care about their academics.

So in other words, they do not ask questions such as drugs, what time you go to sleep, messy/non-messy, that kind of stuff?

I know that kind of stuff gets asked on the Roommate Click site, if they still use that. Not sure about the Facebook site, if they set up a questionnaire or if students just post stuff about themselves and it is kind of just free flowing.

You could call the housing office and ask them. It was a thousand years ago, but I know there were no options except random roommate when I went, and they didn’t ask questions ahead. My D met her first roommate using either the Facebook site or Roommate Click, so no help from me there either.

Okay thanks everyone for the information!!

FC is correct. Those kinds of conversations have been going on over at the FB site. I don’t know if there is any kind of questionnaire when you fill out the housing form. I read in an old thread from last year that there wasn’t one, they just did totally random. If you are not the partying type you might want to avoid Sharp and Monroe, reputation wise they are known for being the “livelier” dorms.

Back in the good old days…before the internet…unless you knew someone from back home, pretty much everyone went random. It all works out.

FYI for Wall - Last year, some students were just assigned to Wall without even applying. Perhaps there were vacancies that had to be filled? So, some Wall residents might not have written essays, gone in with the intent to serve on committees, be like-minded, etc.

Sure, in the end with yet another incoming class of 1600+ Tulane had to put everyone somewhere. Space was tight. Now with the opening of Greenbaum it will be interesting to see how much more flexibility they have to only give people what they chose. I am sure there will be some assigned differently than what they requested, especially women. With the class being the typical (these days) almost 60% women, some will get JL even though not requested. We will see how it shakes out.

@justmehere that is true but since there is a waiting list for Wall I’m inclined to believe that won’t be the situation this year.
