randomly selected roommate vs. facebook roommate

Does anyone have any insight/opinion on whether I should try to find a roommate on facebook or just let the school match me with someone? I've talked to people on facebook, but I still haven't found a roommate, and I'm not sure if it's even worth all the effort. After all, I'm realizing you really can't tell THAT much about a person from just talking to them online. At the same time, the thought of possibly getting a bad match if I don't get a roommate through facebook worries me a bit. I'm not sure what to do at this point! Thoughts?

My son looked on Facebook but it seemed like everyone was trying to one-up each other as to how much they drank and how cool they were. He ended up being placed with a random roommate and it worked out ok. They aren’t best friends, but they get along. He met most of his friends on the dorm floor anyway. You get to know people when you live with them day in and day out. Either way, it’s a learning and adjustment curve. Good luck!

USC also has a third option: the UChoose system through your VIP account.

I think the UChoose system makes lots of sense because its based on ones individual habits/traits. That being said, my DD found her freshman roommate on facebook and it turned out wonderfully.
