***Rank Application Components in Order of Importance for Top Schools***

How would you rank the components of a college applicant applying to top schools?

I’ve heard that for most top colleges (the topmost being the most important), it goes:

  • Grades (GPA)
  • Course Rigor
  • Test Scores
  • Class Rank
  • Essays
  • Recommendations
  • Hooks (URM, Low Income, Legacy, Recruited Athlete, Connections, etc.)
  • Extracurriculars

Okay, so each school has different things of what they want. For instance, Boston University is more concerned with leadership than test scores, while the opposite is true for Temple. If you look on Collegeboard’s website, search the college and under “applying” on the left hand side if you scroll down, you’ll see what each school ranked as “Very Important” “Important” and “Considered.”

You’re welcome.

Grades and Test Scores are the most important followed by Course Rigor and Essays.

Google various schools’ “common data set” and look at section C. There, they state what eval criteria they’ll use.

The same information in the common data set section C7 will also be in the admissions section of college’s entry at http://www.collegedata.com .

Oh, I did not realize this. Silly me. Thank you so much!
