bball87, why is it about Cornell you don't like? I was considering applying there, but I'm not sure.

it is a fabulous school...i am not taking that way...the ppl are friendly...but it is kinda in an isolated place...and what bothers me is that the ppl are soooooo like freaking crazy about their work...kids routinely stay in on friday and saturday nights doing work. How does that make you feel when you walk by all of your friends that are like sorry dude, I have a prelim in 10 days.

Bball, if you do not like Cornell, then transfer. You knew where the location of Cornell was before you decided to attend. As for those students who decide to stay in on friday and saturday nights, that's their decision. However, not all students stay in. I know a plethora of students at Cornell who go out on friday and saturday nights and have a good time. Many students that I know actually go out on the weekdays (Wednesdays and Thursdays) and party. Not all students stay in their dorm rooms and study. That's probably only with the students you decide to associate yourself with.

Yeah...I've been in Collegetown the last two friday nights; the buses back up to North are always packed and the streets of Collegetown are filled with people...if you don't want to get out, that's your problem. Besides, you're going to find a lot of academically serious people no matter which college you go to.

Cornell (I'm here and love it)
Princeton

Dartmouth
Brown

updated average rank - 13 additional scores up to and including psquared - number of rankings = 58, Yale and U Penn = 57

Princeton 3.17
Yale 3.79
U Penn 4.49
Harvard 4.66
Dartmouth 4.76
Brown 4.81
Cornell 4.97
Columbia 5.17

I think it seems like if we took enough samples the average ranking would come close to being the same for all schools, with only marginal differences.

I believe this just shows that you really can't go wrong with which school you choose, if you go to an ivy league, and the only thing that makes one better than the other is personal preference.

However, these rankings are coming from people who do know a good bit about the schools in question aside from prestige. I bet if you took a sample of 100 average people on the street, none of which went to an ivy league school, and asked them to rank the schools. You would see a ranking in which HYP would occupy the top spots, Columbia and Brown next, followed by Cornell, Dartmouth, and UPenn. (I'm not saying UPenn is last so don't get mad, just putting it in that category, which has no relative value at all)

To add to what psquared said, the ranks would vary depending on the major. Each person who responded probably had their own interests in mind.

I don't see how Brown is ahead of Dartmouth and Penn, I think you would see HY, then Princeton, then Brown/ Dartmouth/ Columbia/ Penn, then Cornell. This isn't what I necessarily believe but its probably what happens overall. The difference between a place like Columbia and Dartmouth is way too small to choose on prestige, if you want house parties/ community/ and a beautiful campus choose Dartmouth, if you want NYC, urban life, and bars choose columbia. Its that simple.

Slipper-
Brown is NOT ahead of Dartmouth. Dartmouth is slightly ahead of Brown, but they are virtually tied so far. U Penn is average ranked higher than Dartmouth. The lower the average rank the better. Ranked first=1. Princeton at the top.

No sorry collegehelp, I was talking about psquared's comment.

Exactly, you think so and so, and I think so and so. Just because I say it doesn't mean it is right, just because you say it doesn't mean it is right either, the whole point of this conversation is to see what people think, not to find fault in other people's opinions.

And at the end of my post I said my rankings have no relative value at all, why, b/c they are my opinions, and like your opinions, are not facts.
