Rank North Carolina universities.

^^

Huh? That makes no sense...

What makes Duke better than Wake Forest? And what makes Wake Forest better than UNC? Just opinions =]

Is Elon a boring city?

Highschooler09:
Elon is a small private school with 4-5k students i believe and not nearly as well known as the bigger institutions. As far as being boring, i personally do not know anyone who has attended, but by visiting the campus it appears to be vibrant and growing, with many things to do.

Duke is considered better mainly because of their national prestige, always ranking high in national academic ratings of universities. It is also very selective, more so than other NC colleges/universities.

Wake and UNC-CH are very similar in regard to academics, but are very different in style. Wake is very small and private, while UNC-CH is a larger public institution with highly regarded academics as well. Which of these 2 schools is better is impossible to tell, and really does depend on who you ask.

To the original question;
1. Duke: (easily stands alone; arguably 6th after HYPSM; generally accepted as top 10 nationally in undergraduate education; regarded as providing ivy academics with an elite student life composed of notorious night life, athletics, and unrivaled diversity...not to mention the solitary appeal of basketball)

UNC-CH (great school but selectivity drops with in-state students; lacks diversity, resources, and national reputation of Duke; similar student life to that of Duke with a larger student body numbers wise; out of state selectivity just slightly trailing Duke)

Davidson (very selective; small, liberal arts college with great education but lacks the great recognition of other larger institutions)

Wake Forest (ranking 2-4 was very difficult and I could easily see Wake as high as #2. The small campus atmosphere is great for many students, and allows for close interaction with professors, and a chance to network and grow greatly academically. Selective, but not in the level of Duke because of many fewer applicants and just a hair below UNC-CH because of Chapel Hill's uber selective stance for out of state students. Grade deflation also hurts WF as it is known as a very tough school to succeed at, with A's rarely given by professors.)

NC State (large public institution with several strong programs, most notably engineering. Reasonably selective for a state school, but nowhere near the level of the top 4. Offers competitive athletic teams and typical student life of large public university. Quality choice for continuing your education)

Elon (already described above; growing university, another quality choice to further your education.)

The Rest: Other very nice choices for those not interested/capable of above schools. East Carolina has a quality medical (post-undergrad) and nursing program (undergrad). UNC-Wilmington also boasts a nice nursing program. These two schools offer strong athletic teams (ECU more so for things like D-1 Football) and a highly regarded social life for students. Many other HBCU are availible as well as other UNC institutions that are smaller, but nonetheless good schools.

Just my opinion. Hope that helps.

1. Duke University - Great school, great community, great professors, great basketball. Their size is not too small and not too big and many students enjoy vast parties over at... Franklin street :P Research is top notch as well. However, their FinAid isn't too hot.. you're pretty much gonna suck your parent's money from day 1.
2. Davidson - Duke, Liberal Arts style. Very very beautiful campus with about 1700 undergrads (one of my best friends is going there). Research opportunities are present, but not in the grand style like Duke, although increased communication with profs will guarantee you a spot on their paper. I was accepted but their FinAid wasn't hot enough, but surely hotter than Duke's. Sit in on one of their Bio classes and you'll be amazed at how much you learn. Life is great here, since Charlotte is not too far away. Also, one of the best feeder schools to Duke and UNC Med Schools among other grad schools.
3. UNC Chap Hill - HUGE school. I'm guessing you're from NC, so it's not extremely hard to get in even if you don't have elite stats. I would say CH is about the same as Wake Forest as far as research opportunities and quality of life, but definitely up to par with Duke and Davidson. It's just the fact that UNC is huge and Wake Forest is mid-small.
4. Wake Forest - UNC Chap Hill, but smaller.
-----------Gap-----------
5. NC State - Great engineering and vet/agriculture programs. That's about it. It's UNC but not as academically inclined.
6. Elon - BEAUTIFUL campus. It's a larger Davidson with far less competitive academics and research.
7. UNC Charlotte - Life in the big city is very fun, and I've found that many frosh transfer to ChapHill after being rejected during their senior year of high school. It's a good school for communications and pre-med so I've heard.
-----------Gap-----------
8. UNC Greensboro
9. UNC Wilmington - Very nice location on the beach! Nice music program as well.
10. ECU - Very nice music school (THE best music school in NC) and has an EXTREMELY nice program if you can get into the 6-year MD program where you go straight to Brody and don't need to take the MCAT. Brody is a top-notch primary care med school.
11. App State - Go football team? Beautiful mountainous area.
12. Western - Beautiful mountainous area... in the middle of nowhere
-----------Gap-----------
13. Campbell University - Kinda like a big community college in my opinion. They now have a program where those who receive an Associates from Wake Tech CC can transfer to Campbell for the BS.
14. NC Central

personally i think it's

Chapel Hill / Duke (tie)

Davidson

Wake

Elon

NC State

the rest

also, question: obviously Duke has a great rep outside of NC, but how about UNC, Davidson, and Wake? Do they have good networks nationwide or are they more regional?

in response to the above post, in my opinion UNC, Davidson, and Wake are all quality schools with networks throughout the nation, with of course more of a focus in the NC area and southeast. HOWEVER, personally i do not think that any of these networks compare to that of Duke in-state or across the nation.

As far as NC universities go, Duke is in a league of its own as far as I'm concerned. All are great schools, but Duke's name (name recognition may mean nothing to many and probably shouldnt when considering where to attend) trumps those of the the other institutions in my opinion. For example, the remark "I went to Duke" is often met with more admiration in my area than "I went to UNC/Davidson/Wake", though like i said, I am not bashing the other schools as they are fine institutions on a national level.

The BEST music programs in the state are as such:

Appalachian State, by a LONG shot. The most prestigious and a KILLER marching band.

UNCG. A brand new School of Music building in the woods of Greensboro. Gorgeous. Prestigious but trailing AppState.

Duke.

Wake.

UNC Chapel Hill/ Elon tossup.

Davidson is a solid music program, but small. A really fine school if you can get in.

I dont really know anything about music programs but i think rich hobo is right about ECU having a very good one. They play it up big in marketing with a whole recruiting commercial devoted to some Duke Ellington collection and what not. Never heard of Happy Appy's music program but it could be solid as well, as I'm not exactly a lyric lover.

Appalachian State hosts the STATE high school championships every year and its by no accident. Ask ANY music teacher in NC and they will tell you that AppState is the place to go for Music majors. I am not knocking ECU. I am only saying App has the prestige. Mind you, this is in the classical music genre....orchestras. ECU does have a fine medical school that is gaining in national reputation. However, ECU still is regarded way down the list of selectivity. The other thing is that AppState draws primarily from the counties west of Raleigh: Greensboro, Winston Salem, Charlotte, Hickory, Boone etc. ECU draws primarily from Raleigh east.

When I was in the Federal Government I was involved in an investigation of ECU's Medical School. I came away impressed. If you want to serve eastern North Carolina and if you want to be a generalist than ECU is the place for you. They have some special admission programs for students who meet the above criteria who have proved they can perform, and will work with undeserved communities, but may not have the best statistics.

What is the best college/university for premed?
Not just based on statistics, maybe on prestige etc.

-why? n.c. schools are interesting to me.

ECU is excellent for pre-med. The guy who was ranked #3 in the last graduating class at my high school is going to ECU for pre-med; although we do have plenty of not-so-intelligent kids going there.

Premed? Hmmm..... while there are formal premed programs, there are also lots of kids who just major in chemistry or biology or sciences...and also kids in the liberal arts who apply to med school. There is no one set path to med school. Discuss that with your counselor in college when you get there.

I would just pick the schools in NC that you like, apply to all of them and see what happens.

thanks everyone
for the responses =]

Thanks. ECU is on my D's list because they have an Events Management program in Hospitality. Not alot of colleges along the east coast have that.

ECU is a great school and LOTS of fun. Its undergrad has a rep as a tad bit heavy on the party scene so you have to be disciplined to do well there.....IF you want to go to Med School or Graduate School.

They are FIERCE (as in wicked) rivals with NCState. LOL.

If you had to choose between two schools(money aside):
NC State: Wake Forest
ChapelHill: Duke
Wake Forest: Chapel Hill
ECU: NC State
