Rank reputation of school, teacher, connections and cost

ok. Obviously I see some people that didn’t go to conservatories went to either small liberal arts schools or universities with lesser known music schools with great teachers and are having no problem getting into conservatory for graduate school. Any thoughts or opinions?

“Getting into grad school” can mean many things. Which grad school, how much financial support? My daughter has friends who are in top grad schools who did not go to conservatories…but they went to places like Harvard or Yale. There are always exceptions, but remember that in grad school scholarships are based on merit for than FAFSA so you want to be very well prepared for your audition.

I was just trying to be fair and to get perspectives from everyone. Good point about merit aid for graduate school. We have the same problem and only qualify for merit and zero aid for undergraduate. I suppose we are lucky, but my son won’t be able to do any festivals in the summer except maybe the ones that are free if he can get into them.

Sometimes the undergrad school funds summer programs.

Really? Hmmmm…

Also once he is in school he may have the opportunity to earn some $ with gigs. Seems the orchestra folks are often out on gigs.
Re lessons more laid back and closer to what the norm would be after acceptance, our experience was that they were trying to sell DD on going to the school so lessons, studio time and class visits catered to that objective. Everyone very helpful.

Thats a relief. I found audition day and the day before to be a hectic whirlwind.
