Rank the Ivy and Pseudo-Ivy League

Okay, finally the real rankings. No funny business and no messing around. I want people to rank these schools based simply on prestige factor. Don't factor in "campus life," "financial aid package," "night life," "food quality" or any junk like that--simply prestige factor. Which school has the best image?

Please rank the following schools from most prestigious to the least:

Members of the OFFICIAL Ivy League, Stanford, Duke, MIT, Cal Tech, Johns Hopkins, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Chicago, Northwestern, NYU, and, just for fun, Union College and [insert name here, your local state college].

At the end of the posts, I will tally the results based on a point system. Please stick to the rules and keep the "you guys' are ridiculous" comments to a minimum.

Perception is Reality. Thank you.

Harvard

Yale

Stanford

Princeton

MIT

Columbia

Brown

Penn

Chicago

Dartmouth

CalTech

Duke

Cornell

Northwestern

NYU

I didn’t put in Johns Hopkins and WashU because I feel like they’ve got significantly different prestige in terms of “I’m a Pre Med from JH/WashU” and “I’m a Lib Arts major from JH/WashU.” Its tough to rank Penn in that sense as well (exchanging Pre Med for Business, of course), although I did rank them.

I’d go w/
1.Harvard
2.Yale
3.Princeton
4.Mit

5.Stanford
6.Caltech
7.Columbia
8.Penn

9.Duke
10.Chiacago
11.Brown
12.Cornell

13.JHU
13.Dartmouth
15.Nothwestern
16WashU
17.NYU

btw, MSauce, you’re posting on all of these forums, have you decided where you’re going yet?

No. Either Yale or Princeton. I’m visiting both next week.

WUSTL

JHU

I am basing this on my view as I was applying to college and doing research (or else I would have put Pton#1 :D) . It might be slightly west-coast biased, but I assumed that bias would somehow be a part of this survey anyways.

Purely prestige/name recognition?

It’s a joke to consider these “the real rankings” when you have NYU, but you don’t have a good number of schools that are considerably superior to NYU, academically.

^Very, very true… where is Rice, Emory, Vandy, Berkeley etc.

Union? 10 char

Soulstice - These rankings are based on prestige. I’m sure there are lesser known schools than NYU where you can get a comparable or better education, but to say NYU isn’t as prestigious as some of the schools listed is false.

Also, what schools did you have in mind in terms of being “considerably superior” academically? Last time I checked, NYU is excellent in numerous academic departments. Where is Berkeley on this list?

Harvard

[ENORMOUS CHASM]

Every other U.S. university.

I’m not going to dispute putting NYU on your lists, but how can you put NYU and not Berkeley, Vanderbilt, CMU, Rice, etc?

Where are the women’s colleges, like Smith and Wellesley?

Folks, may we all be reminded that this list is based on prestige rankings of the original schools the were presented by the OP and one additional school by each poster of his/her choice.

I think he just wanted to include NYU to see where it fit in.
