Rank top 20 schools for undergraduate economics in California

Top 20

UCLA is #1 in CA for undergraduate business economics. I believe the other UC’s (i.e., Davis, etc.) are up there.
If you are just looking at pure undergraduate economics, Stanford is #1, UC Berkeley #2, UCLA #3…I am not sure if Cal Tech has an undergraduate economics program. If they do, I am sure it would be highly ranked and above UCLA.

UC Berkeley Haas is #1 in CA for undergraduate business schools. USC Marshall is #2 in CA. UCI, UCR are up there in the top 20 undergraduate business schools in CA.

Would you give me an order for the rest of the UC’s and the type of job prospects like is a 50 k plus salary available at schools after UCLA such as UCSD/UCD/UCSB/UCI

and rank UCSB/UCD/UCI/UCSD based purely off job prospects and sa;lary potential

Not to mention CP SLO, SDSU, CSULB and probably Santa Clara.

huh

Do a google search and you will find lists like this one. A few CA schools are listed here. Other lists can be found online. No ranking is the be-all and end-all but they should give you a sense of which programs to aim for.

@bucketsucsc You don’t think those schools are among the top 20 schools for undergraduate economics in California? That’s what the OP asked for…

@NCalRent i am the OP

is that not what you meant?

I’d place all 4 of those schools ahead of UCM and perhaps UCR. SLO and Santa Clara are probably ahead of UCSC and on par with UCD/UCI/UCSB Is that not what you meant?

Here’s the top 20 econ programs in CA from my perspective.

For Econ, LA and B are clear favorites among public schools, Stanford, CalTech and USC are the top of privates… You are splitting hairs between UCSD/UCI/UCD/UCSB - I’d place SLO and Santa Clara on-par with those schools as well as Claremont (lumped together) and Pepperdine Then UCSC, SDSU, Long Beach and, UCR - you can flip around the order a bit, the programs share a comparable rep among employers. Then Merced, Fullerton and perhaps LMU or USD would round out the top 20.\

From an economic value perspective, a top CSU is probably your best bet.

Honestly, i find these types of lists silly. The schools at the top of the list are so selective they simply aren’t relevant for 98% of the people in CA. The price tags are all over the map. The gap between rankings is razor thin but, the forced ranking implies that Fullerton is an awful school - which simply isn’t the case. You’d do fine with an Econ degree from any of those schools - (I’ll let you in on a little secret… in the real world, your degree is what you make of it. Work experience and tangible results trump and unproven candidate from a top school). Go to a school you are confident you will excel - that will open doors to internships and experiences that will further set your apart from other applicants.

Other schools also offer credible Econ degrees and strong employment prospect but are much more accessible (SJSU and Sac State for example).

Truthfully, UCLA and CalTech aren’t for everyone.

Post your qualifications, interest and budget for more specific recommendations.

Well I’m predicting a 4.1 GPA for 10th and 11th grade(UC/CAl State gpa) a full weighted UC gpa of around a 4.4-4.5 and a 29-31 ACT. I think SLo/UCSD/UCI would be manageable for me

Sounds like it hasn’t happened yet but, I’ll play along… if you apply with a 4.1 UC GPA and 30 ACT, you’ll be a strong candidate at CP SLO and UCI but both schools are looking at a broader profile than that. Applicants with those stats an nothing else are rejected from both every year. At UCSD, your GPA would be a little below average and your ACT average. You’d need a strong essay, course rigor and ECs to be competitive. You aren’t completely out of range for UCB or UCLA but, would need to stand out in other ways.

A private like Santa Clara would also be interested and may make it worth your while to attend.

If you come up a bit short of your prediction, there are still lots of great options, UCR and SDSU among them.

Good luck.

@NCalRent do these EC’s sound okay for Econ/finance at UCI:hospital(leadership board this year potential president junior year). Interact(service club) FBLA of America Vice President club is expanding from 15 people freshmen year year to 46 and counting . JSA(small club but guaranted president by junior year). stocks club also somewhat small but founder and president. Also it started a for profit basketball camp for kids and while it’s still in its early stages I am confident I can make it a semi succesf up business already making a little bit of cash

Also how these 10th and lath grade schedules sound.10th: spanish 3 honors(UC weighted),chem honors(UC weighted) WHAP(UC weighted) Algebra 2 and English 2

Junior year:Ap spanish, AP lang,Ap psych or comp sci, marine science, and am still deciding between pre calc honors or AP Stats. If I take pre calc honors no way I’m getting an A

Sounds like a LOT. If you are able to maintain your GPA with all those activities, you’ll be a strong candidate.
