Rant: Why is Heightism a joke?

Going back to the idea of how shorter people are paid less, achieve less, etc. - I think it's all about confidence and self-esteem. Shorter people tend to have less of that, which results in lower income, less achievements, blah blah blah. Then when you get past that stage of looking down at yourself, then height doesn't really matter.
My dad was saying how he deals with a lot of tall foreigners (he's only 5'8''-5'9''); he doesn't notice how much shorter he is, because it doesn't matter. It's cuz, as growing teenagers, we err..are more concious about height.

Darn you redhairedpeopleism!

Hehe.

We should all move to the Parent's Cafe.

Short people make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day.

Blasphemer.

bumping this

*** was that bump for?

Although I must admit I’m pretty amused; I don’t remember making any of those comments AT ALL.

Because it’s a very insightful thread and addresses a lot of the problems. It also shows the typical mindset of people who aren’t short themselves, who seem to think it’s a joke, when in fact it is the worst form of discrimination around right now.

It is definitely not the worst form of discrimination.

And I’m not tall myself.

What is worse then?

I was by far the shortest person in my class for most of my life. This is a joke.

This thing is pretty ridiculous. Considering that I’m a short white male, 5’7", wasting so much time on such a petty subject is crazy. So what if some women want their guys to be 6 feet or taller? I can no more condemn that than other’s condemning me because I like women with a good…tooth-to-gum ratio, or any other trait.

Life isn’t fair. There are so much bigger issues out their that are worthy of our attention.

Get over it OP.

See: Thomas Quasthoff

Arcadefire, I feel your pain- I claim that I’m 5’1", but that’s pushing it (however, its easier for me since I’m a female). When it comes to height, we’re royally screwed, and it’s not as easy to be respected when you look like you’re 14. However, I believe that height is relative, and if you carry yourself and act like you’re 6’0", then you are. Physically you’re still small, but mentally you can be as tall as you’d like. Besides, you can easily compensate for your lack of height by having an excellent physique, which is something you’re in control of. As a girl I find a toned body more attractive than simply a tall one, and obviously personality, intellect, a sense of humor, etc. is far more important than anything physical. Fight heightism by not letting your height hinder your confidence!

If you’re still bummed about being vertically challenged, just remember that if all the short people of the world somehow band together, then tall people will have to fear for their kneecaps.

(i haven’t read the whole thing…so i hope this fits in)

going with the concept that people shorter than average are oppressed and discriminated against, could this possibly be more to do with their overall appearance than just their height? tall people have more space for their food to go to (they can grow upwards rather than out, so to speak) because of this, they may appear to be slender and well-groomed. this might appeal more to a company.

i don’t have any evidence to back this up… it’s just a thought. some tall people present themselves better than short people and vice versa.

Much bigger issue than your height: your insecurity about your height.

I know. I always feel bad when I see those people having to drink from the 5’0-and-under water fountain or being required to ride on the hood of the bus.
