rare major = chance for me?

Hey, I have sats below 1400 but I'm applying to a major thats VERY rarely selected by applicants and my extracurriculars show that I have deep interest/ strength in that area. Should I apply for the heck of it?

You don't "apply to a major," dude.

Werd.

Wow, you're already completely sure about what you're going to do in college? >_> What major is it anyway?

Of course apply. Which major?

Well, if you think about it, they ARE trying to form a community which does involve finding people with unique interests.

lol chill out guys i have horrible grammar excuse me =X apply UNDER a major? apply FOR a major? yeah i really don't know how to put it. Anyway, its Asian American Studies ...

You don't apply for a major or under a major or any such semantic. You apply to Columbia College. You declare your major when you're a sophomore. You have the opportunity to tell Columbia what subjects interest you, but that's it.

... Is Asian American studies that "rare" of a major?

It isn't that rare of a major, I know a lot of people who apply for it, especially combined with another major

lol oh i thought it was rare [esp. east coast wise] but anyway nice to know..

i'm pretty sure 'east asian language and culture studies' doesn't have nearly as many people as 'asian-american studies.'

lol too bad i like asian american studies so much, dont get me wrong i'm not applying to columbia as a ______ major because it may be easier to get into... i do sincerely like it. anyway yeah u didnt ask haha im just explaining myself byeeee...

For the last time, YOU DON'T APPLY TO COLUMBIA AS ANY PARTICULAR MAJOR. YOU ARE APPLYING TO COLUMBIA COLLEGE just as the other 19,999 applicants are, and it doesn't make the least bit of difference that you think you're applying as an "asian american studies major."

Woah Columbia2002, I think he got the point. You only apply to a major under the British education system where all applicants must know their major before applying. American universities don't work that way. University knows you will change major several times during your stay there, so it doesn't take major into consideration. There are certain selective majors that you must apply to get in, but only after you have been admitted to the school.

dude i got it the first time... i said "i'm not applying to columbia as a ______ major because it may be easier to get into..." as in i don't like east asian studies or cultural studies, thats ALL. chill its an online forum i'm not going to reread everything just so i'm sure you don't misunderstand my words... and thanks reddune for the further explanation

Not really. A lot of big state schools make you declare your major when you apply. And you have to go through a rigamora to change it. Columbia and most top schools don't operate that way.

You're missing the point. The entire premise of this thread is incorrect. Whether we think you should apply with low numbers is not dependent on your intended major.

okay you obviously want to argue here... STOP! cause i dont. i realize that the "premise of this thread" [WHO SAYS THAT?!] is, as you said, "incorrect." THAT is why you have no more need to come here and respond. PLEASE don't. Will deleting this thread make you happier? i will try to find out if i can, although i must warn you along with grammar, i am also pretty horrible with working this site so i probably WONT find a way to delete this thread. in that case, please just try to live without thinking any more about this thread. Thank you.

When you post here, you subject yourself to the tyrannical commentary of the masses. I know, it must be terrible.

C2002 is right, you're thinking about this all wrong. We understand that you're not trying to game the system, that you have a legitimate passion, and all that. That's cool. But that has zilch to do with an admissions decision, which is entirely independent of your plans once you get to college. They reward past results, not future projections (for the most part).

Hope that clears up... well, something.

yes i do get it. a lot of people already made that clear. thanks though. i am officially calling an "End" to this thread.. lol
