am a jr!!! wondering how my ecs would look to colleges in the top 50ish range!!!
1. mock gov (10-)
a bunch of club leadership roles (teach bill writing, organize fundraisers, chair debates), committee chair in 10th (statewide), passed bill through senate (statewide)
2. mun (10-)
vp, 2 awards at local conference, teach new members speaking skills, teach current events
3. school service club (11-)
raising $$$$ to fight cancer, work in fundraising to businesses, volunteer at lots of club meetings
4. national mock gov (10)
same as 1, selected as 1 of 25 from 200+ in my state, proposal i wrote & defended placed in top 25% of 400+
5. camp counselor (10-)
1 week over summer, once a week in school year, work to teach younger girls relationship skills
In my opinion, your EC list looks pretty good! You’ve clearly done a lot and it all has a cohesive theme (leadership, public speaking, more on the humanities side). Obviously I don’t know what your grades and test scores look like, but assuming you’ve taken APs and are doing well, I would say you definitely have a shot at good schools.
I perceive you as a typical involved student in high school that cares about your community. You will get into a “ good” college, likely a T50, if the rest of your application is of high quality.
Unfortunately you are similar to many other applicants to T50 schools. Your essays are what will make you uniquely you and explain your passion…,why you selected these activities and what you learned about yourself in the process.
Just keep doing what you are doing in your same clubs and try to grab a President or VP type role in senior year.
Start to research and focus more on “fit” of school than ranking. GW and American are not T50 schools but great is you are interested government. Many state schools are in state capitals with lots of internship opportunities. Your success will not be measured in whether you got into a T50 school.
