So I'm hoping to transfer to UCLA for fall 2013. I was wondering how I look so far compared to any friends or family you might know who have been in my position.
I'm applying as a geology major since im currently an earth science major at UCSC.
By the end of next quarter I will have finished my prereqs for applying for transfer, which are 1 year chem, 1 year calc, and an intro to earth science course. I'm also hoping to finish up my GE's (I might end up having 1 more ge that I won't be able to complete unfortunately) and also stacking 2 physics in my last quarter so i can finish the 3 classes of physics.
If everything goes according to plan with my classes, will I have a confident chance of being accepted into UCLA or is it still kind of a stretch?
I have a 3.84 from my freshman year (with 1 year of calc, 2 quarters chem, both writing classes, and some ges), I only got 1 B (in first quarter writing) last year and the rest were A or A-'s so would that help?
Also my expected credits when I transfer will be 106-111 (depending on if i decide to go with an extra class while taking physics B and C together)

P.S. Here is the list of transfer stats for each major and for fall 2011, 17 people applied and only 2 accepted with an average application gpa of 3.11 and an average acceptance gpa of 3.33 and average credits is around 110.

tl;dr: finished all the prereqs to apply for transfer but not everything they recommended and 3.84 gpa freshman year, are my chances at UCLA for geology major good?

Thanks.

Thanks, im trying to one more 4.0 next quarter before i start my physics series. Hopefully my gpa can be raised up to a 3.87-3.90.

Also i finished 6/6 mandatory pre-reqs for transfering, but if everything goes to plan, ill only have 3/7 recommended addition pre-reqs finished. That would bring me to a total of 9/13 pre-reqs done by the time im ready to transfer. Is that good enough for geology in which usually only 10-25 people will apply for transfer?

Thanks for your help. I’ve looked over the transfer stats multiple times for ucla and im pretty much trying to invest most my time in ucla with class planning for the next couple years and all that. I just needed to make sure I wasn’t wasting my time planning on going to a school that I can’t even get into.

The only worrying thing is that only 2 people got accepted into that whole major for fall 2011…perhaps you should apply to a major that has a higher acceptance rate (although I wouldn’t know what that would be)…there’s a good chance you can change back in later on.

It’s a known fact that UCLA prioritizes intercampus transfers the same as CCC transfers…at least in writing. What they actually do is a mystery but intercampus transfers do see slightly lower acceptance rates. Since CCC students have the advantage of TAP and what not, it might be difficult for you to claim a spot in such a small major. If your primary goal is to get into UCLA, then you should apply under a different major. If you’re fine with staying at UCSC, then take the shot at the Geology major.

Yea its really wierd though, either the applicants for geology have diminished a lot recently or UCLA is cracking down hardcore on that major. I looked up the stats from 2001-2011 and in the 2001-2007ish it was usually a 50% acceptance rate with about 6-10 people getting in with 10-20 applicants. Im also contemplating engineering geology since theres only 3-5 people who apply and 1-3 people usually get accepted. The application gpa and acceptance gpa for engineering geology is also lower by around 0.2 as well.

You’re gpa is looking pretty good and having all your pre-reqs done can only help you.
