Scored well on SAT (scored high for 8th grade, qualified for CTY SET for both Verbal & Math),
Took SSAT twice
(1st in June '18: and 2nd in November '18 - both 99%-ile).
GPA: 3.9 (8th grade - 1st semester), 3.8 - 7th-grade year (a few B+ grades in 7th grade)
Subjective:
• Essays: Good
• Math Rec: Very good (currently in Integrated Math 3 with an A/A+, it’s a separate HS transcript)
• English Rec: Very Good
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: Robotics (same teacher for CS elective) - Very Good
• Principal/Counselor Rec: Very Good (doesn’t want me to leave)
• Sports (if any): lol, not for me…
• Instruments (if any): Trombone, Violin
Decent EC’s:
Joined a high-level orchestra about a year ago (play both trombone and violin for 3 years), robotics team,
started MS math club
junior board member of a local food drive for 1 year
completed online courses throughout middle schools (AoPS, IMACS)
Hook: URM (Haitian), lively personality, impressive Dad jokes
Weaknesses: GPA, will shatter if I touch a ball(a descendant of Mr.Glass)
Chance my future.
You should be a very competitive for all of your listed schools. Although I really do not understand your “weaknesses” section. Your GPA is fine, but just how fragile are you ?
Tad late to the party here… @baronofunk Just wondering why your GPA is one of your weaknesses (it seems fine to me, but I’m not familiar with your school’s grading), yet you scored exceptionally high on the SAT(congrats on being a double SET qualifier) and SSAT.
And the non-athletic weakness shouldn’t be a problem (in my humble opinion)- if schools only looked for athletic kids, they wouldn’t have a diverse community/ well-rounded class.
@ThatScorpio - Thanks for the advice! I can be critical of myself if I don’t get straight A’s (especially when I see many do on the forum).
@Ctdoctor - GPA drops to as low as 3.75-3.8 one semester due to medical reasons (with a few B’s), but explained in the application. The rest of the transcripts is usually 1-2 B’s (often in PE).
@bjkmom - I guess it’s hard to convey intent on the internet. The thread was supposed to be a light-hearted tone - self-worth is indeed not tied to getting into a particular school. No worries.
Looking for a bit of advice – Just received word that I did well in the Scholastic Writing competition - (a few regional awards). Should I email the schools I’m applying to with this update?
Maybe if there is a specific person from a writing or English program that you have talked to before, you can email them to show that you are still interested and include that. Or, you can contact someone new, maybe your AO
