Applied RD to CAS, deferred to GSP.

Hope to see all my fellow GSPers in September!

i don't think its like high school, its more like going to a really good community college in a great place (NYC) and you get guaranteed admission to NYU it you meet the requirements at the end of the 2 years...sounds pretty good to me

i'm tired of people saying this is an extension of high school...its college. You are given the many of the same courses that are offered to students at CAS, plus you are guaranteed admission to CAS on entrance of your Junior year. To be accepted to NYU in any way, shape, or form is an honor this year because of their extremely selective applicant pool. for anybody serious about going to NYU, they know this is a worthwhile venture.

is there a lot of GSP stigma on campus?? do the regular students think the gsp students are the 'stupid' kids or anything like that?

Not really, there are jokes tossed around from time to time, but you aren't really segregated from the rest of NYU - just another one of the many undergrad schools at NYU. However, the running joke is that GSP stands for Generally Stupid People. hehe.

I do feel GSP is an extension of HS - your classes are almost completely mapped out for you for two years and it is VERY hard to double major, no matter what the NYU rep said on the phone. Many GSP kids have it hard enough fitting their basic major requirements once they are in CAS. I love the city, but I honestly would not have gone to NYU if I got into GSP both financially, and for the lack of freedom of courses.

ive got into stern, but what ive heard of GSP it seems like a great program and is anything but an extension of high school. The people ive met are also very awesome, If you got in you definately should go.

If I got into GSP would I have heard by now? From the Sound of it I am more GSP material than CAS material (32 ACT, 1330 (760v570m), 39/350, 3.9w, 3.5uw, 770writing, 750ushistory, 630math2c, APUSH 5, APEnglang-5 APPsych-5) I'm kind of afraid that now it's all or nothing. (most likely nothing with how competetive everything is this year)

Bigred, although I agree with your laudation of NYU, when one thinks college, one thinks of the freedom to choose the courses one is interested in, as opposed to high school, where courses are prescribed. Hence once again you have no freedom until the second semester of your sophomore year, and as Iheartny pointed out, double majoring is extremely hard to due to the extensive lack of electives that GSP entails. I'm glad I at least got accepted to GSP, but....?

Hi Guys,
Fact is NYU buries everybody in required MAP courses. Most folks get them out of the way first year for sure and second year as well. After all do you want to get stuck in a freshman seminar class in Jr or Sr year? Probably not. So GSP is in my mind a great alternative to the MAP requirements because you are forced to get them out of the way and it turns out that the smaller classes and attention are a good deal.

Ugh I'm so upset. NYU has been the one and only school I've wanted to go to since before I even looked at any other colleges and I'm most likely rejected (my stats are on page 2 of this thread.) I know if I had gotten deferred to GSP I would have been notified by now bc I only live, like, 45 minutes away. I visited the campus yesterday just to walk around and it made me inexplicably upset.

When I get rejected, it'll be the worst day of my life, what do you think?

Xanderman, the day you (may or may not) get rejected will NOT be the worst day of your life. Contrary to popular belief, college is not the be-all, end-all entity we are made to think it is. Stay positive! Things tend to work out for the better, or so I have found in my limited experience. If you do get rejected, you can transfer, you can go to NYU grad school, you can live in the city later on in life if you so choose. I'm just as nervous as you are, but I think it's important to remember that it will turn out alright in the end, and that there are options out there. Good luck, and stay cool!

Xanderman...let me tell you, college acceptance/rejection will not RUIN your life. I applied ED to Cornell this year... I was MR. CORNELL...sweaters, pennants, car decals, screennames (BiGReD), sigh.... I was rejected from Cornell and I thought that my life would be over, I got over it remarkably quick. Within a week I had finished all of my other applications (NYU, UDel, Binghamton, Boston College, Carnegie-Mellon)...and I quickly became Mr. NYU...you will soon learn that college isn't the most important thing that will happen in your life....so dont stress!

Well MAP courses are taught by some of the best profs at NYU. The courses might be large (like all intro college courses), but they are divided into small recitations.

I don't think it's really like 2 more years of high school after looking at it. It actually looks like it gives more freedom than some of the other programs I've seen. I applied to occidental as well, and it has what they call "core requirements" for everyone, and it looks like the cirriculum is actually more strict in that. There's actually a pretty good variety of the cultural and social classes, and you get electives. The freshman year might seem like another year of high school, but it will be like that for almost everyone. Most of the classes you talk are necessary to fulfill requirements for the major anyways. I'd look on the bright side. The classes are smaller and you won't have any TA's that teach for the prof. I'll admit that some aspects seem pretty lame, but if you really want to go to NYU, it's pretty dope. I'll probably enroll unless Oberlin or Denison offer me more money.

I just got my letter for GSP today. I'm actually really happy because I thought I had gotten rejected completely. I'm not sure if I'm attending though. For anyone who's interested here's my stats:
GPA- 3.5 UW 3.9W
ACT- 32
SAT- 760v570m
Class Rank- 39/350
AP Psych-5 AP Englang-5 AP US-5
SATII Writing-770 USHistory-750 IIC-630
Currently in AP CalcAB and AP Englit

I'm just happy that I have the option of attending NYU. It's also nice to not have to wait another month in agony.
