Urban Prep Academy Gets 100% Black Male College Attendance... Again - Black History Month
(Urban Prep: 100 Percent Of Graduates College-Bound For Second Straight Year)
Well, they've done it again. Urban Prep Academy of Chicago, an all-male charter school with kids from the "worst" parts of Chicago, is sending 100% of its graduating seniors off to college. The school, founded in 2006, has stated that its continuous objective is to see to it that all of its students go to college. They are succeeding with flying colors.

The school started with kids whose futures had been left for dead by their public schools: Only four percent of the school's incoming freshmen were reading at grade level when they arrived on campus. But by sending all of their graduating seniors to college, they've not only gotten these kids up to speed, they've allowed them to zip past every other public school in the entire United States.

The students at the school are required to wear a jacket and tie every single day. They also go to school for two hours longer than other kids. They take English twice a day and are given a mentor with a cell number that kids can call 24 hours a day. They've clearly hit the mark when it comes to understanding that getting our children to the land of educational success requires both academic and sociological strategies.

Read about last year: <a href="http://archive.chicagobreakingnews.c...hievement.html%5B/url%5D">http://archive.chicagobreakingnews.c...hievement.html</a></p>

And, finally read about the Cristo Rey that also started in Chicago.

Impressive! It also sounds like the school is developing the foundation for excellence in college as well.

That is really cool!!

if only all schools are as good as this

^^ I heard about this on the news! They interviewed some of the students and they seemed to really enjoy being there. I like the fact that they refer to each other as “brothers”. It seems like an amazing place to go to school. :)

Except that their scores on state tests are absolutely abysmal. Last year only 15% of their kids met state standards. None exceeded them. The rest of the district had a 66% meets/exceeds rate.

The fact that they are getting 100% of their kids into college means only that someone is making sure each kid applies to college. It says nothing about the calibre of the college or whether the student will be able to graduate. For all we know the vast majority are applying to 100% acceptance colleges.

This is a bit like the college rankings based on the number of AP exams kids take, while ignoring whether the kids actually pass the exam.
