Our school had all the seniors retake the ACT in October. Our son had a 34 already (and all his sub scores clustered between 33-35), so we had told him not to worry about retaking. But since it was free and during the school day, he decided to take it. He made a 36 and was beyond thrilled.
So if your son is okay with taking it again, then I would let him.
@brooklynlydia - you make a good point. He had taken the pre-ACT as a sophomore and had a 34 (which we thought was awesome. We were hoping for anywhere from a 33-35 based on that pre-ACT score. So, the 35 was hoped for/ but not shocking. He is actually pretty chill about taking it tomorrow, and as @gpo613 , we don’t have to send the scores to any schools if it doesn’t go well. Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement. I’ll try to remember to circle back in a few weeks once he has scores back.
I suspect that people haven’t been waiting with the level of anxiety that I have to see the outcome! We just got the test scores back today, and it went well!
Composite: 35 (no change)
Math: 34 (+1)
Science: 36 (+2)
Reading: 36 (+1)
English: 35 (-1)
Writing: 9 (new)
I guess the end result is that there was definitely no harm, and he actually brought his science and math up which (for a hopeful engineering major) is a good thing.
Does the school(s) he is applying to require that all scores be submitted? Most allow students to only submit those scores they wish to submit. In that case, no harm can come from taking the test and he might make a 36. Contrary to what some say, a 36 is a lot better than a 35.
