Re-taking ACT in College (Advice Needed)

Hello everyone. I took ACT in HS without studying and received a 24. Now I’m looking to transfer universities and I’m retaking ACT to compensate for poor HS grades.

Target Score: 29+

I have about 4 months until test day. I bought The Official ACT Prep. Also, I’ll be a full-time student w/ a job.

What’s everyones’ advice to get the highest possible test score? What was your experience taking the ACT?

Hi! I’m a rising high school senior who’s taken the ACT twice (28 first time, 29 second time). I’ve received 34’s on reading and writing, 28 on science, and a 21 on math (yikes). The thing that’s helped me the most on the ACT has been working through practice tests with a friend so we can help each other with problems and so it’s a little less boring. Since you’re in college, maybe you could visit a professor during office hours and have them help you through any practice questions you’re lost on, as they’ll definitely be knowledgeable on the subject. Also, I would recommend using youtube and Khan Academy to brush up on testing strategies and specific areas that you are weak in. Overall, the most important thing is to do actual practice tests in a silent area with the actual time constraints- getting used to the test format and pacing yourself will be the easiest ways to boost your scores. Good luck!!

I don’t know any professors who would be willing to take time to tutor someone for free on high school level material. They’re busy people. Office hours are for talking about the college classes they teach, unless they specifically tell you other random stuff is allowed.

The college care less your test score if at all when you transfer. Your colleve GPA is far more important.

@billcsho That’s true for most colleges, but many more competitive schools (like Vanderbilt) require and emphasize HS test scores.

Bump.
