REA Class of 2018 Applicants' Discussion Thread

Oh, I’m very passionate in magic. Should I talk about that?
I’ve been doing shows both private and public since the third grade, and I’m a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood and occasionally perform there.
I work with small animals (doves, chickens, ducks, bunnies, parrots, etc.)
My Grandpa was one of the best in Israel 40 years ago, and now, he’s my personal tutor. It’s been a tradition in my family for a long time. My whole family has been performers for quite some time, many of who, have been doing it for a living.

Yeah, I know a girl with 2400 SAT , self-studied 12 APs (all 5) and 800 for all her SATII got rejected by all the top-tier schools last year.

I guess that is the price of being regarded as numbers instead of a human being.

@UCschoolsftw

Write about it!

UCschoolsftw, YES. That’s awesome. You don’t have to listen to me, but I would totally write your “what matters to you and why” about magic. You could make it super novel and fun to read.

I know my letters of recommendation really show my human side.
Also, I’ve been told my writing also shows my character. My English teacher talks about how I always smile in class, and always compliment people. She also goes into how I always brighten up the classroom and always have something very witty/funny to say that gets the class to crack up (I mean, she wrote about my academics, too) lol.

Magic isn’t a common extracurricular at all, so definitely write about it. In fact, treat it with the same weight as your academics. They need to see that you’re more than just another “2400 SAT, 36 ACT, took every class available on the face of the earth and got perfect scores, valedictorian” applicant.

Good point! I mean, I was planning to write about my non-profit (it’s for malaria in third world countries) and how I organize runs and fundraisers against it. For example, I’m currently in the process of organizing my first 5k. I have a team of several friends.

Would magic have a heavier weight than that? I mean, I LOVE magic, but I’ve always wanted to change the world, too.

Write about both? I’m sure you can fit any of the three essays to any of the topics, so one essay for each, maybe. If you can show your passion for both, that’s even better than just one.

You have more than one essay to write, so it’s not exactly a difficult choice.

Thank you so much for your insight, CCers!! haha

Really appreciate it! :)

Stanford’s in the Rose Bowl again. I’ll know on Friday whether I’m rooting for them or not. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to watch the game if I don’t get in.

How long does it take to get some confirmation that Stanford received your app? I sent mine a week ago, but have not received any email yet.

I submitted my app on November 3rd and got my email on November 4th. You should probably contact admissions if you don’t get anything in the next week. Check you spam messages, too.

If I don’t get in I’ll be rooting my hardest for Michigan State, although as a fan of a Big Ten school I would usually root for the spartans, this will just make me care more. And if I get in of course I’ll root for the Cardinal but we’ll see.

If you guys get into Stanford, how will you celebrate? Better yet how will you tell people?

I can’t be the only person who has thought about this. If I’m accepted I’ll probably just tell the people who helped on my application and if someone asks me where I’m going to school next year.

If I get rejected:
Facebook post, “JUST GOT ACCEPTED INTO STANFORD!!! jk”

Accepted:
Facebook post, “Stanford rejected me :/. JK!!!”

Either way, I’d tell my family and girlfriend first, then my teachers :)

well if I got in I’d prob tweet I GOT IN!!! in excitement and scream and try to see if I can go to cali in my christmas break haha

That would be a wonderful gift to those who helped guide you Brogrammer. I hope you get that celebration!

I would literally start screaming. Or I’d stop breathing. One of the two, and hopefully the latter doesn’t make me pass out.

Doesn’t matter if I’m rejected or accepted, the decision will relieve a lot of stress.

Four words: craziest snapchat story ever.
