When people say this school is a reach, this one is a match and this other one is a safety, what percentages of college acceptance are they implying for each?

reach/long-shot school = _ to _%

match/target school = _ to _%

safety school = _ to _%

also, long-shots and reaches mean the same and the same goes with matches and targets right?

super reach
high reach
low reach
reach
high match
low match
safety

haha.

dont look at it as in percentages. if you are a B student applying ED to brown, it is a reach. you should have something “special” that makes you stand out to have a chance.

A match means taht your scores, GPA, etc. are within the 25-75 percentile range. however, this does not guarantee admission.

Our state’s flagship university accepted about 59% of applicants in 2009. It says that it looks for a high school GPA of 3.5 to 3.9. I think the median ACT range was 26 to 30. Our older daughter got a 34 on the ACT and had a 3.4 GPA. We considered this school to be somewhere between a match and a reach for her because of her GPA. Her sister got a 35 on the ACT and has a 4.0 GPA. We considered this school to be a safety (although I have to say that almost nothing actually feels totally safe!) Both got in.

^^My son’s school uses the euphemism “likely” instead of “safety” and considers all Ivies to be far reaches for everyone unless you are a recruited athlete.

First of all, I think it is YOUR probability of getting in. I don’t think it’s possible to estimate that to more than 1 significant figure, for example 10%, 80%, etc. Not 23%.

I think safeties are 100%, match is 40%-90%, reach is 10%-30% and lottery is 0%.

A Naviance scattergram from your school is an excellent tool to estimate your probability of acceptance.

We only considered one school a safety for d-she was so far ahead on both ACT and GPA. It also turns out not to be a good school for her either even though they offered her the honors program.

All the other schools d has applied to she is either within the 25-75 range or a bit above it. Both she and we consider those to be either matches or possibilities. Why am I calling the one school in particular a possibility instead of a reach? Because it isn’t a school where she is below the academic level of the other students- it just is a school with high selectivity. It isn’t her first choice since she is almost completely undecided.
